How to parallel park in ANY tight spot

By Tony Ng

SINGAPORE - For a lot of drivers, parallel parking conjure images of sweaty palms, nervous glances and impatient motorists behind, hands positioned on horns.

It's like kryptonite but much worse because sometimes you just can't get out of parallel parking in a congested city.

How to parallel park in a tight spot

It's a universal problem as well. A recent poll also revealed that nearly one third of European drivers (32 per cent) said they needed more than one attempt at parallel parking, with the figure rising to 41 per cent for women.

The poll, commissioned by Ford, also said that new drivers across Europe rated parallel parking as stressful as Christmas shopping and twice as stressful as a visit from the in-laws.

Here's a possible soluition though. Do it like the driver shown in the video, who literally uses the bumper to, well, bump the other cars.

The video also helpfully demystifies how some cars can end up bumper to bumper in parallel lots.

This writer understands that this is how parallel parking is done in Europe, especially France where bumpers are literally used as such: for bumping.

Nothing new, saw this being done in France in the early 2000s, and must have been going on for a long time. [laugh] I also wondered how they manage to parallel park so close to each other with very little clearance, at first !!!

Cars are cheap there, especially the local makes. Almost everybody drive a lao-pok 1-litre+ hatchback, almost invariably manual gear.

I'm not sure, but it certainly looks like they don't engage the parking brake, to facilitate 'bumping'. If you engage parking brake, there is some added resistance, and maybe the bumper can get crushed.

I wouldn't call it 'bumping', more like 'pushing' - there is surprisingly not much damage, hardly dent, just scuff marks.

Turbocharged

If cars are cheaper, bumper replacement is cheaper and insurance premium is cheaper, then we talk. Singapore and France not the same.

Aiyo. That lot is really too small lah, why he wanna squeeze in? Go find another lor. If it was the front car that anyhow park and caused the lot to be small. Go park somewhere else and then come back to scratch the car lor. [:p]
