Question: 4 off days for maids

I think some of us put in more work than the maids! Having employed a few (none of them up to standard, really), I know what I'm talking about. Now, no more maids (except for weekly cleaning service) - but it's tolerable, which shows that the typical maid does not much extra anyway.

Then again, it's our own home, kids we're looking after - so I guess it's natural that we put in more genuine and sincere effort...

I always say don't complain if we ourselves cannot do the same job under the same conditions.

Are you willing to do it? Don't think it is so easy being away from family and friends for long periods of time under the watch of your employers 24hours a day without emotional support, at a measly pay.

If you cannot do the same, shut up. [mad]

On a side note its clear a large proportion of employers are not fit to employ maids. They should be born 2000 years ago and buy a slave instead. [:p]

who is going to pay money to send them back? so who is going to pay to get another replacement?

it is easy for them to say, as long as no $$$ from money. [laugh]

This statement really caught me speechless. You have the point there. NBzz

For this, no one force them to leave their own country. There is always a choice.

If you mean preying on the misfortune of others is OK and does not grate on your conscience, then I have nothing much to say.

Except that it says a lot about your value system.[lipsrsealed]

Bro, you didnt read Saturday ST? MOM already declared that if outside work hour, anything that happened to the maid is their own "pasa" liao, employer is not responsible to it.

Ya... read it in ST on Saturday. They say implemented this year Jan liao. Funny how this rule is kept so secret nobody knows

one more bad thing about Singaporeans,

They like to bring their maids out to restaurants and let the maids watch the bosses eat.... i cannot understand that....

want to save money on 1 headcount then let the maid stay at home.. not let them watch you eat....

i think these employers are worried that their maids misbehave at home while they are not around..bring them to watch them eat so to watch over the maids..also make sure of the maid to carry stuffs..squeezing every bit of juice out of the maids but refused to give them restaurant quality food..slave drivers these employers are

Did you compare your work with your friends too. So your boss should not let you go out with friends?

Most maids are young, impressionable, and in a foreign land. They should be looked after, protected from unwise company.

Since you are so good with rhetorical questions - here is a more apt one.

Would you allow your daughter to go every Sunday to Lucky Plaza to meet jaded maids and banglas?

Your intentions may be good....to save the maid from trouble.

But she isn't your daughter. Neither is she your relative. She is your employee. As much as she has no right to tell you to pray to Jesus, you have no right to tell her who she sleeps with. She is an adult with her own needs and wants. Let them lead their lives and need be suffer their own consequences.

Don't be uptight and self righteous. [grin]

That one should let their own parents to worry about! They know they are walking into a jungle once they step out of their house/country.

Oh, I am not so noble. Only because her well being is in my own best interests. Her problems become mine.

I agree designated day-offs are a very basic working right but I would pay more for one who does not hold me to it.

I can't understand that as well. Imagine you go for a lunch with the bosses and everyone gets to eat except you and noone talks to you during the entire session, except to ask you to take note, make business calls, etc...

Well said. There are multiple kinds of hypocrites around. They can subject their employee to their form of treatment but never tolerate if it was given to them likewise by their employer. Quite surprisingly coming from a so called democratic highly educated english speaking first world swiss standard society in this 21st century.

I understand what it's like to do all the housework myself everyday. So I employed a maid to relieve my burden. And I know how tired she is to do my house work for me everyday.

She gets her day off every sunday and public holiday. Birthday off is given as well.

[thumbsup]

It is apparent from posts in this tread and on newspaper forum that there are a lot of hypocrites and selfish people around.

P.S. Sorry if I offend anyone, I just have strong views on this matter.

Supercharged

some, if not, many, SG households are a bunch of ar se holes. they treated the maid worse than a dog.

i know of a family; made the maid wake up 4am in morning, must mop floor, wash clothes, then make breakfast for whole family. then cannot sleep whole day coz of more cleaning to do.

then come dinner (this one is the champion), she has to cook for 3 families because 2 other families will come to the home to eat, and this includes 3 generations. then she can only sleep at 12am because of more cleaning to do.......

and you know why she has to wash clothes at 4am? Because she's washing for 3 families.....

And they might also bring to her to the other 2 families to clean their homes too on weekends....

And no extra pay for her... she gets the same pay as other maids

really ar se holes........

So i advocate for more humane treatments for maids.... give them deserved off days. They are worse than our NS boys.

Disgusted at such behavior. I always believe in treating others with respect & dignity. Be it they are your employee, whether you paid them to do something, your subordinates, or trainee/recruit.

I had a neighbour once who did something like the above and worse too.

In the end I had to call the police to get the maid out and I personally went around the neighbourhood to get people to see the show when the police came. Of course I had to tell the neighbours what happened la. [laugh]

To see the xpression of that a------es face when the police came knocking while the whole neighbourhood is watching....thats priceless......... [thumbsup]
