Question: 4 off days for maids

Agree.

Then why does the governement make the employers responsible for their maids?

- Maid get injured, either at workplace (ie, home) or when out on their off-days, the employer has to be responsble

- Maid goes out on off days, fools around and get pregnant, the employers' get penalised to be responsible for sending her back (all the fares and such) as well as (this I'm not sure but it;s what I;m told) having their deposite forfeited.

So why is it that our laws do not promote a healthy employer-employee relationship but makes the employer the guardian, the care-taker and the responsible for their maids?

Because our Govt, like many others, only wants to collect levy but not bear any incidental costs. To use taxpayers monies for such cost is also not right. Anyway, such expenses are not exactly significant compared to paying "market rate" for domestic help in developed countries like Australia, US, etc. It is already a huge bargain but many are intent on squeezing more from the helper and wanting to milk the system for more benefits. If Govt imposes minimum wage one day (like in HK), I can imagine the ensuing outrage.

You drink, get hungover, take MC, who is paying for the loss in productivity and your medical expenses? Should your employer then ban you from drinking, smoking and engaging in all sorts of unhealthy lifestyle choices? Granted helpers are live-in employees, more rules would apply but to lock them up to minimize your potential losses/liabilities is absurd. You can treat your helper like a member of the family but let's face it, she is not your daughter.

This is quite true. I am already seeing this pattern among my son's classmates. There is one which is the most extreme one where there was once when the maid was going back for holiday, the boy cried really badly and didn't want to go to school and wanted to spend more time with her. But when the parents go overseas for holiday, he happily says goodbye to them.

Maid as maid and mum as mum. However more often, i see roles of mum as maid and maid as mum. I know of a family whose grandfather complain about a particular maid of not coaching her granddaughters in studies. It saddened me that a person so senior and elderly cant differentiate the role of maid or mum.

some gives crap excuses just to hire a maid lah.....nb....i know of so many whose hubby salary range from 7k to over 20k and they still want to work. House or flats already paid in full and when i eavesdrop on their conversation they admit if they stay for a month at home they will certainly go crazy! To each his or her own.....the kids the maid is taking care is theirs and for me i will never trust an outsider or anyone else to take care of my own.....but its just me lar. No wrong no right!
