BoneStock 5th Gear June 7, 2011 Share June 7, 2011 Hi folks, I am currently under singel's mio plan and the contract is expiring early next month. The plan is 8Mbps, home fixed line and an iOne Plus mobile. At home, I connect one PC directly to the mio box, another 1 PC and 1 laptop use wireless connections. We are relatively light users so this current setup is more than sufficient for our usage. I only do occasional downloads but my kid watches youtube on a regular basis. The youtube videos are very good and no jerking at all....and the PC is on wireless connection. Only problem I have now is that since switching to a new 2wire mio modem provided by Singtel, it disconnects almost on a daily basis. This can be very annoying when I am working from home, and in the middle of a telecon. I also have another 2 mobile lines under my name with singtel, but they are not bundled with mio plan. So right now I am considering 2 choices. M1 25Mbps fibre or maxonline 6Mbps 1) Currently my mio modem is in my study so I can connect my pc directly to it. If I switch to M1 or starhub, the connection points will be in the living room, so meaning all my computers have to be connected via wireless. 2) Singtel goes with per min billing. M1 and starhub per sec. Also the latter 2 allows free calling to 3 numbers, singtel doesnt have this perk. 3) Heard the M1 residential gateway is not too good. Connections may not hit desired speeds, but may be rectified with some tuning. Also wireless strength not good. Is it possible to disable the wireless feature on the Huawei and I connect my own wireless router to it? 4) Heard starhub cable is not youtube friendly. true? My kid uses youtube regularly so I do not want to disappoint her. btw, her PC will be connected via wireless as well. I have been with singtel for >10years and so far I have not tried using starhub or M1. Will really appreciate anyone to give some advice so that it is easier for me to make a decision. Btw, I am planning to retain all my existing numbers - home fixed line and 3 mobile numbers. thanks for advice. ↡ Advertisement

M1 and starhub per sec. Also the latter 2 allows free calling to 3 numbers, singtel doesnt have this perk. can't help you. but why can't you get the unlimited plan? you can go upto 15 mbps for singtel if i am not wrong 3) Heard the M1 residential gateway is not too good. Connections may not hit desired speeds, but may be rectified with some tuning. Also wireless strength not good. Is it possible to disable the wireless feature on the Huawei and I connect my own wireless router to it? if you choose m1, you can get a homeplug to extend your wireless range 4) Heard starhub cable is not youtube friendly. true? My kid uses youtube regularly so I do not want to disappoint her. btw, her PC will be connected via wireless as well. i tot for SH, if in your neighbourhood, there are a lot of pple using SH, it will slow down your connection speed? when is your place going to have fibre optic connection? maybe you can wait for that I have been with singtel for >10years and so far I have not tried using starhub or M1. Will really appreciate anyone to give some advice so that it is easier for me to make a decision. Btw, I am planning to retain all my existing numbers - home fixed line and 3 mobile numbers. regardless, which service provide, you can port of your numbers. try calling them to ask thanks for advice. See my reply in blue btw, i am using singtel and my connection speed is 1 mbps. it is ok when i am playing online games on my ps3

Rainman 1st Gear June 7, 2011 Share June 7, 2011 (edited) MIO channels suck, people usually subscribe MIO because of EPL only. Starhub normal broadband sucks too, there are no disconnection problem, but the speed is not consistent especially night time. Fibre speed is good but required wired connection for optimum perfomance. Compare ordinary broadband, Singnet is the best, though I'm not using MIO connection. You may want to call Singnet to check on the line/MIO condition first, daily disconnection is certainly not normal and acceptable. I get DC occasionally also, once in couple of months when first started and eventually 0 time occurance. Weighing some pros and cons, u may want to do a total switch to Starhub, which my wife did recently. Subscribe a basic SCV plan I think its just 25 bucks, a 50+ bucks phone line and a 70+ broadband. On top of everything, she became a hubber which gives her good discount for all 3 services and also HP upgrade every year. Having to say that, Starhub also gives free home line, which I'm quite happy with that small saving. Edited June 7, 2011 by Rainman

And yes, Starhub does not work well with Youtube.
Joseph22 Turbocharged June 7, 2011 Share June 7, 2011 Not that bad lah.. there is another redemptive point for mio is their On demand Channel (not the per movie pay one.. hor... another channel where you pay a fix amount every month but got 30 movies to watch anytime.) is good. you call out movie as and when you want to watch instead of waiting for the movie to start. MIO channels suck, people usually subscribe MIO because of EPL only. Starhub normal broadband sucks too, there are no disconnection problem, but the speed is not consistent especially night time. Cyberet Neutral Newbie June 7, 2011 Share June 7, 2011 if i remember correctly. the 10mbps mio plan requires 2 phone line. in that way, u can seperate your miotv & miovoice to the new miobox, and your internet to the other phoneline & different modem/router for internet access. the problem lies with the new miobox. having tried starhub cable, m1 fiber, and singnet dsl, i'm sticking with singnet another point to stay with singnet is that your son watches youtube which singnet seems to stream the best. call up singtel to confirm the two phoneline thingy before your signup ;) i'm still using the old white miobox on 6mbps and it is better than my 30mbps starhub which i terminated. used m1 fiber 100mbps during their trial and still prefer singnet dsl

Robo 2nd Gear June 7, 2011 Share June 7, 2011 i swtiched outta SH 1.5yrs back and am using ST's 2wire modem i suspect its not the connection that is slow. go get the modem changed. initially alot of disconnecting also. but now its very stable. no disconnecting or wad so eva. im running on 12mbps. which is kinda overkill as i download movie once inawhile only, play online games like left 4 dead once in awhile and have video conference weekly. i heard a 3mbps is good enough. well.. dun go the starhub way as if many of ur neighbours are using u will suffer alot.
