Sad situation

'What has happened to our society? Where is the filial piety?'

MR LOH CHEE KONG: 'I am writing with a heavy heart after reading Monday's report ('Dying alone'). What has happened to our society? Where is the filial piety to our elderly parents who brought us up with their sweat and tears? While some of these poor folk may have been single, what happened to their relatives? It is really sad that they had been abandoned way before they passed away. It is the responsibility of the children and the next of kin to give these people at least a decent burial. The parents of this generation had better train their kids well lest they too end in the same sad situation.'

Filial piety works both ways.

If parents abandoned children at young age and lead wastrel lifestyle, can they really expect filial piety fm kids?

I believe many parents left their children behind for one reason or another. Some employed FT to provide the parenting in their absence. Some employed grandparents who may be illiterate to do so. Some in the name of religion further dilute the tradition. What we see is what we had done. Longterm sadness.

Sometimes I wonder how will I be when my time comes...

If one is helpful to others in times of their need, there is no need to worry about this really.

do try to get your parents to live with you esp when they are old. loneliness kills them more than sickness sometimes.

Many factors..but mostly upbringing, depends on daughter-in-law ...... kids also will be learning the ways how you treat your parents..

Turbocharged

Perhaps internet should have a group for "single old people near you". People who has no kids, their spouses had died, no kins, etc

Wait....actually there is such thing...called old folks home. Hiaz...think next time I will go there.

Totally agree. Works both ways.

Don't just read and swallow any news report as it is. Sometimes there are things and inconvenient truths that are hidden from public, things that happen deep inside that outsiders are not well aware of.
