A 15-year-old Indonesian boy is dead after he fell into a flooded drain and was swept away during Wednesday's heavy downpour.

The dead body of the boy, identified only as William, was found by Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) rescuers in the canal next to Block 82, Whampoa Drive, reported Channel NewsAsia.

He had been reported missing for several hours after his friends saw him fall into a flooded drain near Balestier Road during a heavy thunderstorm.

The teen, who was here on holiday, was with two other friends when the incident happened.

His friends described how William was wading through shin-deep waters at 2:30pm when he fell into the drain.Although the drain is guarded by a railing, William is believed to have fallen into the 1.2-metre drain after stepping through the railing.

His friend said they tried to rescue him but he was then swept away by onrushing water at the intersection of Mindu Road and Mandalay Road.

I think the boy WAS already in the knee-deep drain playing!

Was caught out by a sudden gush of water.

Why was he in the drain intially? You tell me!

I dont think its like 'fall into the drain' kind of accident.

He was not in the canal to begin with.

He was walking with his cousin when he fell into longkang along Mandalay Road and was washed into the big canal. The road was flooded and he couldn't see where the drain was.

FYI.. Vivian Balakrishnan was at the scene at night after the body was recovered. Heads gonna roll leow

That stretch of canal used to be my bro and my playground!!! That time the sides were sloping type. We would catch fish, crab and monitor lizard. We would walk along the canal from the mosque to st george place.

It brought back lots of memories. Pity the boy drowned there.

nowadays MPs really walking the ground, showing concerns.

in the past, i think they don't even bother to drop by.

well done!

my concern is, can they take it or not? every accident & incident must drop by, really must work as full time MP.

15yrs old?swept away in that small drain?

Road was flooded till shin level. He couldn't see where the drain was... so fell in and was swept away. If the water at shin level at the road.. you can imagine the over flooded drain would be much deeper than what the picture shows.

Twincharged

It's hard to imagine what really went on. I thought it was only some minor rainfall, but apparently in that particular location there was a flood (shin-deep water level?) and the waters were not stagnant, but rushing with enough force to sweep the kid off his feet and carry him along.

Like I said, it's hard to imagine flash flood and the power of water flow without actually being there.
