Why would they bother to explain? The number of car owners visiting car forums are very minimal, probably 15-20%? The rest 80% of your uncle aunties obedient guai guai drivers with stock car can't even be bothered.

Are you sure those guai guai auntie and uncle have stock car? Their SE may have thrown in a set of sports rims for them when they bought the car. It is NOT covered as the sports rims are freebies, not factory standard, even though the rims have the company logo at the centre. Solar film is also not factory standard by the way!!!! Even if you argue that 99% of the car have solar film, the nasty insurance company may have their set of light detectors to prove that your car missed LTA standard by a 1% in terms of the amout of light coming through the window, thereby void your warranty! Who on Earth will go and check their actually light penetration % on the windows? Even if you check, your detector may not be the same as theirs!

How about Direct-Asia ??? Do they have strict policies similar to Aviva?

Direct Asia says as long as your mod are LTA compliace, they will cover those parts that are factory standard, and not the mod. For exam in a car accdent your windows are smashed, they wil replace your windows without solar film. Your aftermarket 17 inch sports rims are smashed, they will give a set of 15 inch factory rims. You can drive it for a while then trade in for your 17 inch at aftermarket shops. This is better than refunding you full amout and say you are now on your own right?

I think DA is fair.

By the way, when I started this post, it was FYI. But it had opened a can of worms.

The affected owner has spoken to a news reporter.

Apparently, this case will be featured in the New Paper on 8 Jun 2011.

When I spoke to the owner today, he reiterates that Aviva surveyor first and foremost task is apparently to find fault with the insured by going after mods, which they know that probably a large number would be affected; and void the insurance to avoid payment.

Aviva company are fully aware of this issue in mycarforums & some other forums.... but they why they choose not to explain....something fishy....

what do you expect them to explain?? they say sometime, specified the type of modification not covered... they got screwed cause the customer will run, they dont specify the modification terms and let it stay vague and blur, customer wont know and continue to assume and when things happen, they simply void the policy... if you are aviva, what will u do?

I changed my air filter from the disposable one to a Hurricane one. Considered mod?? [sweatdrop]

CONFIRMED!! its type of modification that will increase the overall power of the car and different from manufacturer spec...

Even if the mod does not affect the car's performance, it is still a mod! Putting leather grip on steering is also a mod whether it is for visual, for touch, for sound or performance.

Aviva is showing the world of insurance how clever they are by exploiting loopholes and ask seemingly innocuous questions like mods.

And then acting on it when the claims come in.

That's entrapment.

Btw even yr when u buy 2nd cars which is 5yrs or etc..they want it to be in a state of out of the factory condition.....everythings stock..pay for our car so ex now they want to be in control of making their car like it belong to aviva...

yalor... its the consumer who always get it.... seriously speaking, many contracts are unfair to consumer... be it signing contract with telco, insurance company & etc.... the consumer is forced to sign and accpet all those unfair terms... the only choice that the customer have is to choose to sign the unfair terms with company A, B or C.

I feel Lucky not to be insure by AVIVA, they dont insured performance car. Think with this threadtopics, they can loose many custormers already. Who will pay insurance without getting insured? Not many cars on road driving stock rims in spore. This looks more like a scam, with no transparancy. Really appreciate and feel sorry for this bad experience driver, to let whole spore knows which insurer to avoid in future. I'm really relief and grateful to this thread starters.

To be fair to Aviva, I emailed them once I got wind of this case. They replied promptly, reiterating about the modications issue but asked me to list down my mods. I told them I have sports rims and changed air filter and they replied that they will cover in event of accident but for the mod parts, they will only cover to factory specs.

I think this is quite fair plus their customer service is prompt. Maybe bros here insured with Aviva would like to clarify with the insurer direct first before condemning them?
