Car swerves, flips and explodes on PIE

IT WAS a scene right out of an action movie - the car, after swerving left and right, flipped over three or four times before hitting the centre divider and bursting into flames.

Miss Zac M Noh, 55, who works in a construction company as part of its safety personnel, said she had just passed the Bedok North Avenue 3 exit and was trying to move from the extreme right lane on the expressway to the middle lane.

She was driving to her sister's home at the time.

She said that while changing lanes, she swerved sharply to the right to avoid hitting a car in the middle lane.

"I tried to turn to the right where there were no cars, but it was as though the carhad amindof its own.

"When I turned the steering wheel towards the right, the car turned left instead."

Frantic, she tried braking, but the brakes were unresponsive.

"Can you imagine it? There were cars everywhere. I didn't know where I was going or whether I was going to hit anyone," she told The New Paper as she rested on a grass patchon the road shoulder.

Hmm... interesting story. I suspect road hogging and not checking blindspot when changing lanes has something to do with her accident. <_<

She's a dangerous driver, wonder how she got her license?

What excuse! Turn right go left?? Her car runs on a rudder?

Glad she's okay and nobody else got involved. [sweatdrop]

Wow so drama. Think she too kan chiong, and the brake seems working but the problem is because of wheel lock that is why the driver feel like its not working at all.. but funny how come turn steering wheel right, the car turn left.. weird..

She was at high speed, and the car drifted.

"Unresponsive brakes". In this group, it means they mistook the ACCELERATOR for brakes!!!

Ask around and you will be surprised on how common it happens.

Amen to that! I can't imagine if another innocent person had been involved in this auntie's highway stunt.

"Then, the back of the car flipped upwards, and the car rolled three or four times on the ground before landing on the right side up."

The witness said the car rolled a few times before righting itself.... if the road so crowded as she implies , it's damn lucky nobody else got involved.

For rear wheel drive you counter steer to correct directional issues. But Vios is a FWD car, you DO NOT counter steer to correct control issues. In fact at high speeds, swerving will result in car loosing control.

I think a lot of drivers do not really understand their car. Just remember, do not swerve when you are traveling at high speeds. With FWD cars, you need apply brakes then steer, you can't drift a FWD, but you can certainly crash it.

Never swerve also die, swerve also die, so which is better? [laugh] [laugh]

c'mon... we use the expressway everyday... simi need to swerve?

Simple 4 rules to follow:Before changing lanes,

1. check Mirror

2. signal

3. check blindspot

4. reduce/increase speed to match the traffic and change lanes

If having done 1 and 3, you notice another car suddenly overtaking from left.. jolly well don't change lanes yet.

The failure to notice a car on the left when changing lanes, and needing to swerve right... means ONLY 1 thing... NEVER CHECK BLINDSPOT.

There is a certain speed and turn angle where the car still have traction, complicated thing is there's nothing scientific about it. It's all a function of your tyre, your suspension, weight of car etc. In an emergency situation, I doubt anybody can perform the calculation.

So the textbook way is just just brake hard and pray harder.

This would explain why the car had "a mind of its own". Her car ended up drifting when she turned too sharply and braked hard at the same time. Hit left dan right like pinball.

I'm thinking ABS not working meh?

I can understand airbag not deployed cos there were no frontal impact. The frontal beam still intact from the pic which showed the car burned to a crisp. Only the bonnet hit the barrier.

Ya if only every driver in singapore practise that safe driving, less of weird accident will not occur already. Some driver just need to have major accident than can learn, some ? no hope already.. no matter how many major accident also never learn, some worst do not understand how to handle the car at all.

I totally agree. There should not be any need to swerve on expressway at expressway speeds.

The fundamentals that you mention still applies no matter what level of skills and experience on the road.

I'm quite sure the ABS works.

But then again there's no ABS for kayu driving.

Either that or her speed is questionable. We won't know for sure.
