Yewheng Twincharged May 21, 2011 Share May 21, 2011 (edited) http://www.todayonline.com/Singapore/EDC11...on-of-new-towns "The National Development Ministry will announce on Friday the formation of new towns, 14 days after the publication of General Election results. More details will be provided on who the town council chairmen will be and the new names of the town councils, if any, to reflect changes in the redrawn electoral map. MediaCorp understands that some decisions have been reached. For instance, residents of the new single wards will likely be served by town councils of nearby Group Representation Constituencies (GRC), such as the ones they used to belong to, for economies of scale. Meanwhile, in Ang Mo Kio GRC, the new town council chairman is set to be Dr Lam Pin Min, Member of Parliament in neighbouring single-seat ward Sengkang West. Ang Mo Kio MP Inderjit Singh, who was its town council chairman for the previous two terms, told MediaCorp that the team submitted papers last week nominating Dr Lam for the post. Changes are also expected at Hong Kah Town Council. It will likely be renamed Chua Chu Kang Town Council with Mr Zaqy Mohamad as its new chairman. The Chua Chu Kang MP will replace Mr Ang Mong Seng, who has retired from politics. Some chairmen look set to stay, like Mountbatten MP Lim Biow Chuan for Marine Parade Town Council and MP Denise Phua, in her new GRC of Moulmein-Kallang. Cheow Xin Yi" [thumbsup] Immediately after KBW take over and make a starting move to change the SMC and GRC management for further cost savings. Ya just like the merging of Aljunied and Hougang Town Councils. Hopefully the cost savings would pass down to the consumers. (Although not alot but it is just a beginning.. hope he could bring more changes that could bring down cost of managing town councils and HDB flat soon [rolleyes] )
Tonyng 4th Gear May 21, 2011 Share May 21, 2011 This sounds like it will pave the way for 15-man GRC. Or make you think harder to vote for oppo if you are scared you will not get town council service because it is in big brother GRC. I am disturbed. But cost of HDB flats, town councils got no say, only up to MND. Instead why the cost of HDB flats are so high for only one reason, opening up Singapore HDB resale flats to the influx of PRs using Singapore as their stepping stone without any proper control of profits reaping by those in the first place, all the way back to mid 1990s. After 1/2 year the picture would be clearer whether they learn a lesson or still think they are always right mentally. The existing ones already there last 5 years and at least $10million richer than in 2006. Still need another 6 months to prove themselves. Ok. The new ones.. ok.. 6months.. let's see.. Thedream 3rd Gear May 21, 2011 Share May 21, 2011 this all sounds "fishy..." Fine if Hougang comes under Aljunied GRC, but so the MPs in SMCs will have minority say in what the town councils from the GRCs do?...

Thedream 3rd Gear May 21, 2011 Share May 21, 2011 KBW now trying very hard to make changes and only time will tell... so let's wait and see.. if it is really for better. i'm more referring to the immediate implications... Say an opposition member wins an SMC during the next elections. He cannot assure voters that the ruling party will not apply their current policy of giving priority to their supporters since the town council no longer comes under the opposition MP... Like that in future the opposition SMC no need to worry the cost of running town councils.. [laugh] ok back to topic.. maybe that's the loophole.. anyway it is just starting.. so there might be some minor tweaks in future also hard to say. Come year 2016 than see again..
