An express bus driver’s failure to pay for the nasi lemak he ate at the Gambang Rest and Recreational (R&R) area along the East Coast Highway on Dec 24 led to a fight, which has gone viral on social media.

In the one minute and 49-second video, several R&R employees were seen involved in a brawl with the 32-year-old bus driver near the rest area parking site about 1.30am.

The drama unfolded when the bus driver chose to only pay RM1 for the nasi lemak which was sold at RM2 at one of the stalls there.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Noor Yusof Ali said investigations revealed that the nasi lemak, normally sold at RM3, was offered to bus and lorry drivers, as well as regular customers, with a discounted price of RM2 each.

However, Mohamad Noor said the bus driver chose to only pay RM1 which irked the stall operators and led to a fight.

In the video clip, the bus driver who was surrounded by several people was hit and kicked after they alleged that he had hit one of the waiters at the R&R, who had earlier asked him to pay for the nasi lemak.

 

Mohamad Noor said prior to the fight, the waiter claimed the driver demanded for the balance after making the payment.

The driver then started attacking the waiter by attempting to strangle him.

Mohamad Noor said the waiter claimed that the driver had also hit his head and kicked him.

“Police detained the bus driver at the district police station when he arrived at about 1.15am today to have his statement recorded. Six others aged between 32 and 44 have been detained in Kuantan and Maran to assist investigation.

“All seven men are being remanded till Saturday under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting,” he said.
