Relocating Batt to Trunk.......

I am surprised that just a battery is enough change the handling characteristics of the car. Previously, I will get understeer while turning right (tyre screeching and sliding marks visible on front left tyre).

The batt is originally located on the left side of the car. I shifted it to the trunk and doing just that alone improves the handling. Tyres no longer screech as the same cornering speed. It does not improve tremendously, but I am able to get around 5-6KM/H more. Not a bad thing.

If you are facing understeering problems with 1 side of the car, then you might want to consider relocating your batt.

I would have thought that doing this would make the situation much worst since there is even less weight to counterbalance the driver weight.

Not it depends on the setup of the car and the weight distribution. Sometimes, too much weight on one side of the car can upset its cornering because of the inertia. The momentum is pushing the car to go forward while the wheel is trying to change direction.

No doubt weight also improves grip as it helps to press the wheel on the ground, adding grip but too much will overcome this benefit.

How much to relocate the batt and where ??

I DIY myself thus I have no idea how much it cost and where to get it done. But most WS should be able to do it.

If not just visit Sim Lim Tower to get some thick cables (thickness at least equivalent to 2 x 4AWG). then get some heat shielding sleeves to protect cables from the heat in the engine bay and some connectors and you are ready to start.

Took me around 3hrs to rip out the carpet, chairs etc to lay the cables.

TS, the Satria Neo is a hatchback, so your boot is essentially sharing the same air as that in the passenger compartment right? Please be careful of battery fumes.

My is MF batt. No fumes. Anyway the "fumes" is H2 which is harmless.

Sorry, take me so long to see this tread.

My Estima's 12V is also at the left rear. But they are there not so much of counterweight or weight distribution as it's main objective as this car weighs slightly over 2 ton.

Putting batteries at the rear will also give car the precious last few seconds of power supply needed in critical moments during a collision to continue to power up those electronics, ABS, VSC, EPS and other sensors etc.

I reduce the wiper washer water to zero.

Save 2kg from the front load.

I always tell the mechanic to fill up the engine oil to the minimum level. Can reduce another 1kg, front load.

There are lithium battery replacement for motorcycle and porsche on the market. Not sure if such batteries are available for normal cars or not. That would greatly save >10kg easily.

Yes there are. However the cost...... I don't think you will want it.

For me, I also relocate my batt to the trunk. Its to keep the batt cooler, hence prolong its lifespan. It also free up some space in the engine bay to allow me to put a DIY airbox.

Its not entirely necessary but I just do it for fun. Treat it as some hobby mods.

If you are really serious about going for the relocation, make it a must that the cables have thick insulation and more than enough ratings. if you can provide additional conduit to protect against damages.

engine oil does get burnt up as you drive. if you fill to the minimum level during servicing, by the time your next servicing is required you'd have less than the minimum level which means your engine is not only lesser protected but you waste more fuel due to the excess friction

but all that to save 3kg?

you sure boh ?

might as well remove rear seats and mount the battery in the middle of the rear seat position.center distribution , shorter cables .

nonsense la .

don't eat before you drive , or take some laxative pills a day before you intend to drive. sure save weight.
