Saw my uncle lift the bonnet & spray water directly into his car's engine bay during car wash to wash away dust, the car can still start after. Is this a proper practice?

malaysia car wash provide this service if you request (of course you pay abit more..)..

i don't spray directly at the engine bay.. but i use a wet cloth (not dripping wet type) and wipe down certain area, after that i use some tire foam to spray onto the engine bay cover and wipe down again (i do this because somehow i find that it maintains the blackness)..

NOTE: above are based on what i do for my car only.. [:)]

Twincharged

Spray at low pressure should be ok. I always do that, but I do use a plastic bag to cover the electronics and battery terminals. Normally spray degreaser and leave it for 5-10min then rinse off with low pressure. After rinsing just start the engine to let it dry before applying any dressings.

John112: Just have to cover the battery points, fuse bos, and prevent spraying directly (on purpose) onto the other electronics and spark plug area.

Hypersonic

Can use pressure spray to clean the engine but make sure you have air gun to blow dry the electrical components.

c&c used compress air and water which merge together and start spraying inside my car, after spraying with "water".

they clear away the water again with compress air. well , they are professional = anything damage , claim them.

i find it very clean after washing.

Try to do it on a hot sunny day, no blower nvr mind, leave the bonnet open for a while.

Just cover airintake and electronic will do. Nvr do it when engine is hot you might crack casket.

This engine bay vortex washing gun is powered by compressed air. The amount of water and air can be manually controlled. After washing the water is shut off and the gun is used a a high volume air blower.

you need to ensure that water does not get into the spark plug and ignition coil area. else it can be damaged.

Some years back a friend sent his lancer to an outside workshop for servicing. Package includes engine bay washing ... after wash and service, friend drove car out ... not long after that, car jerked ! He went back to workshop, they found that spark plug was wet. They dry it and problem resolved.

Later when I serviced my car with them, I saw how they wash the engine bay. They use water hose to rinse the engine bay lor ! w/o covering anything. Luckily for mine, spark plug wasn't wet.

I recall seeing one workshop washing engine bay. They spray some liquid (like engine bay cleaner), wait for a while, before spraying off with compressed air/water ...

So just beware of the different types of "wash".
