I think its not true that they din know about the resentment at all. In fact from what I can see, they have anticipated certain levels of resentment which is why they have actually kind of delayed the election for quite a while. In fact SM Goh mentioned just before the election that the "ground is not sweet". The MIW also have people helping them to keep a lookout for online sentiments and it is a fact that there were various voices of dissent on the internet for quite some years alr which I doubt they do not know at all. Its just that they know but perhaps din know that it is to this extent.

I think your last statement is what really nails them.

Many of the office bearers especially GY & LHH expressed shock that even though they had been working tirelessly on the ground for the past 5 years (which I think these two & their colleagues really did bec of the imminent threat nearby...), they did not expect the waves of negativity on the ground can hit them so hard, shaving off popular vote percentages as compared to the last GE & knocking out quite a few of them.

Just like my company.

The middle mgmt likes to collect DATA. So whenever Top Mgmt ask for info, they have the ready DATA to show them.

The Top Mgmt after seeing the DATA and found the revenue is Good and satisfied.

But they don't even know the bottom staff all overworked, underpaid and recently cut away OT claim to boost the bottomline.

Sadly most of the staff that can leave already left, others all stuck between a rock and a hard place.

The Top Mgmt gives Middle Mgmt good bonus and the Middle Mgmt gives 13 month to bottom staff + Alpha of max 1 more Mth.

Remember our country is being run literally like a company i.e. Maximising profits, minimizing costs & ABSOLUTELY MUST WATCH THE BOTTOM LINE ALL THE TIME ABSOLUTELY?

They don't coin the name Singapore Inc. for nothing....

However, one thing to note is, despite the huge waves of resentment, they din lose too badly...only just 1 GRC and 1 SMC...although their votes did dropped significantly, with the level of resentment they experienced during 9 days of campaigning, they must have feared the worst.. :D

Probably that's why a handful of goodies were given hoping to cushion the effect? Grow and Share lah, U-Save lah and SCC rebates lah......all coming in around the same time.

Wonder will it be different if there was no such goodies.... [laugh]

actually really pity GY...think he tried working the ground a lot but was really booted by the negative sentiments against the govt and not for his lack of efforts..therre were far more idle PAP MPs than him but the rest did not get punished for it.. [:(]

Like what one uncle said in the coffee shop.

GY n LHH, are just the scrape goat for MBT et al.

Lost means lost, so naturally will retire.

I think opps was just lucky to get Aljunied.

Gov still got super strong 60.2% support. In many parts of the world. This is undeniable statistics of super strong win!

Ground resentment worth how much?

Softening of stance from some of the ministers & throwing in a lunchtime sorry session for good measure days just before polling day were events that had never happened before since the day I started voting many many moons ago.

Not sure if it happened previously but I would say they were seriously spooked....

I'm not sure 60.2% support is considered strong. In other parts of the world, if you get 60%, you probably lost at least 1/3 of the seats..it is the flaw of our system which seees the ruling party getting only 60.2% and yet occupied over 90% of the seats in parliament. don't forget also that lots of the 60.2% are votes from civil servants whom many still thought they are obliged to vote for the ruling party..the real support I believe is far lower...dun forget also that this is the lowest PAP ever score since independence..and also I disagree that WP was lucky to win Aljunied...they were known to have worked hard on the ground for the past 5yrs since 2006 GE and hence gradually managed to win the voters over..

So I can safely say the folks from all the Cs did feedback to their advisors & they in turn did pass the information along to their superiors but somehow these critical ground sentiments were either not taken seriously or were yanked off just before they reached the very top...

Yeah for the fact that theey apologised, I think they must have feared that they might not lose just Aljunied and could be even more...anyway some people admitted that they disliked the govt but in the end still voted for them after they sensed that aljunied is very likely to fall and they are not sure if they want the opposition to win so many seats in parliament (its a fact that some people still think that stocks would crash and investors would flee if opposition had gotten more than 1/4 of the seats)..

Aljunied GRC is the sacrificial lamb to appease the wrath of the people.

Its a strategy to focus the public attention at 1 GRC and psychology at play - others will vote rationally - as its a known fact people want oppo, but not in their own turf.

I like this alot and learnt alot from this erection.

If not for the goodies, fear of property devaluatiion/doomsday statements or the most powderful lunchtime solie rally session, my guesstimate was that they may lose at least another GRC such as EC & the overall popular vote percentage may be just 57-58%.

That is all academic now.

i guess u r rite...since there r ~40% votes for opposition, there should b >6 elected OPP MPs in parliament. It's the despicable under handed GRC system n the redrawing of election boundaries tat cause this.

A light hearted moment.

That CASE guy, what was his name again, must be thanking his lucky stars his ward was cut off from Aljunied GRC.

HENG AH!!!!

Only the young NTUC guy touted as a potential office bearer dam suay.

He & DC were the only casualties without even having the chance to do anything.

Very sure 5 years on these two will back with gusto.

Perhaps even if they knew something is not right, they chose to live in their past glories, and such a mentality has been 'strengthened' by their 'great leader' repeated reminders to look at the past........ blinded by so-called past successes, they lived (or still live) as if the results of 7th May is just a passing cloud.
