KARTer 2nd Gear May 9, 2011 Share May 9, 2011 There are bread & butter cars (well, slightly 'higher' than B&B up the ladder, so to speak) which come with twine exhausts.......... i mean two SEPARATE exhaust 'boxes', one on the right, the other on the left. I can understand why high performance cars may need two separate exhaust, but why do normal cars need two also?? ....... if one is good enough for most other B&B cars, why bother to add weights to the car when one will do?? I have held an exhaust in my hands, it's not very heavy, but it's also not light.... Can any bro tell me the reasons why some normal cars need two exhausts please? In fact, some high performance cars (eg STi, E9 etc) just need one single exhaust .... ↡ Advertisement
Iambored Clutched May 9, 2011 Share May 9, 2011 probably for aesthetic purposes? or maybe the engine's a V6 or something?
Ooosh 1st Gear May 9, 2011 Share May 9, 2011 some is aftermarket exhaust which is designed in a way that it splits into two....it is also partly because of look but heavier....

In fact, some high performance cars (eg STi, E9 etc) just need one single exhaust .... What you call "exhaust boxes" I guess are the mufflers. Usually, cars with two exhaust pipes actually come from one muffler. Of course there are those that have two mufflers as well, but these would be smaller. Cars that are "slightly higher than B&B up the ladder" have maybe around 150bhp or more. Having two exhaust pipes instead of one allows the exhaust gases to flow better. This will allow the combustion in the engine to be more efficient and hence achieve higher maximum power. Some tuning to the ECU is usually required to take advantage of the better flow. There are many aftermarket exhaust pipes that are lighter than stock ones, especially those made from Titanium. The design of the muffler makes quite a difference as well. For example, the STi stock exhaust is much lighter than the WRX stock exhaust. WRX/STi have only one exhaust but the diameter of the exhausts are much larger, usually from 2.25" to 3". Higherer-powered cars (say >200bhp) can efficiently push the exhaust out of a big pipe. But lower-powered cars (~150bhp) will have problem pushing the exhausts out of a big pipe. Putting large exhausts on these cars would actually result in worse exhaust flow and lower power. Therefore, these lower-powered cars that want to achieve higher maximum power should use two smaller exhaust pipes instead of one large pipe.

Thank you...... now I appreciate under what circumstances there's a need for two 'small exhaust boxes' instead of one BIG one.

Thus you can achieve the same flow rate as a single muffler but lower noise.
