...I don't see how a country of heartless citizen can expect to have a government that rules with a heart !!!!...

Huh?

I think it should be the other way round.

上有所好 下必甚焉

The above quote was also in the Chinese tutorial for old man.

But i am not sure whether it registered in his mind....

Can you snap and upload some pictures of it? Genuinely curious. Along with his posted notices.

Why not you come down PP and see for yourself before they take it down. You can visit the MPS shelter below 108 as well.

it's the same people from the writer's village that voted the man out...writing is cheap...action counts...we keep saying we need a government with heart...but then it is the heart again(now called heartless) that voted the man serving you for 27 yrs out...I don't see how a country of heartless citizen can expect to have a government that rules with a heart !!!! [shakehead] [shakehead] [shakehead] yes...my writing is cheap as well...

Ummm. These are funds derived from taxes. All Singaporeans pay taxes, and it is NOT up to a single political party to use these monies as leverage, inducement or blackmail.

Whatever "underhanded tactics" they wish to employ, they should never do so with public monies. This is not a private playground showdown between political parties. All parties including the damn incumbents are supposed to be working *for* the people. *We* don't work for them, *we* employ them. What sort of myopic idiots are most Singaporeans that they condone this sort of overwhelming arrogance and hubris from one party, giving them a massive mandate, time and time again? I guess we (at least the 60.14%) really are "daft" after all. [rolleyes]

I know you're probably going to lecture me on being a realist or pragmatist, so let me just make a pre-emptive reply here. To my mind, giving a heavy-handed, authoritarian (pretty much totalitarian, really) single-party regime a mandate over and over again is the *least* realistic and pragmatic thing to do. Those who do this have absolutely no vision and no real concern for the long term future of this country. Without a diversity of views and the freedom to express them, how in the world do we expect to survive in a fast-changing world?

The correct response to a bully threatening to beat you up for lunch money is to defend yourself or ask others for help. Not to keep giving in meekly and rewarding the bully's behaviour.

Similarly, the correct response to a single party threatening to use your own money to rob you of your democratic freedoms is to ensure that enough people defy the party's threats as to render them completely ineffectual. This would've happened, for example if multiple GRCs had gone to the Oppo - not even a party as heavy-handed as the P*P would've been willing to render 30-40% of Singapore a "slum" (their words, not mine) by carrying through with their threats. Instead, 60.14% of Singaporeans have meekly surrendered their lunch money, encouraging the bully to stick with his threatening behaviour.

Fully agreed with the sentence in bold.

I think the PAP have long been disillusioned in their own propaganda, to the extent that the existence of the party is even more important than the country. How the hell can they use the public funds as a leverage to sway opposition supporters over? LHL's explanation that there must be a clear distinction between residents in PAP's and opposition's wards simply reeks of political pretense.

Just a snap shot of how the lift lobby is like in PP for my block. The notice board on the left belongs to CST whereas the one on the right, which is in front of the lift belongs to Sitoh, this is already the case for many many years. If you don't believe, you can go ask your friends living at PP. I am not sure if Hougang is the same.

That thread they are talking about TC at Aljunied. If you don't believe come down to PP and see. The boards are still up but don't know for how long. I believe there are more PP people here, they can say whether I said the truth or not.

As a fellow PP citizen, I have to agree with you for all the points made. Many people have been hoping & rooting PP to remain a oppo ward but no thanks to theirs being one.

My mum together with many old folks have been climbing up & down stairs bec the lifts do not stop at every floor.

The 60.1% majority has spoken & they prefer status quo.

We respect their choice just as we respect STYP winning, even if it is just by a vote.

We have fought a good fight but unfortunately we lost.

Hope WP can do us proud & pick it up where the honourable Mr Chiam left of.

shucks, they think they're getting paradise. it's only a lift!!!

I think the PAP have long been disillusioned in their own propaganda, to the extent that the existence of the party is even more important than the country.

Interesting way of putting it. Let me quote a few brilliant phrases from one of my favourite novels, 1984. Tell me if any of them resonate with you.

The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from all the oligarchies of the past, in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites.

We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means; it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power.

The old civilizations claimed that they were founded on love or justice. Ours is founded upon hatred. In our world there will be no emotions except fear, rage, triumph, and self-abasement. Everything else we shall destroy

i'm not bugged by pap's policies, but by their authoritarian approach.

this is how i see them from the beginning days of LKY. it's always about power, and then building the country with him at the top.

contrast this with the founding fathers of the US. They got power, but they want their ppl to be more powerful than the govt, knowing that a strong govt will only lead to tyranny.

my vote goes to any party that can establish such a system in SG and from there, we'll see the end of tyranny. at the moment, this is what rules our country- a regime which controls the press, the elections, the ppl's minds, the ppl's money and don't give a damn about transparency and accountability.

the counter argument is that any party in power will do this. as i said, i would like to see these govts try this on their ppl in UK, US, Aus etc. These are real democracies where power belongs to the ppl. but too bad. 60% of Sporeans have been indoctrinated. thanks to the internet, many are opening their eyes. but many are opening their eyes also and looking the other way.

should pap get voted out one day, it'll be a victory for democracy, not any one party.

Turbocharged

By the way, PAP won over Potong Pasir by just 78 votes after taking into account the overseas votes, and not 114 votes as widely publicised.
