I have heard from some parents that this is also true for about 15% of students at the Secondary and JC levels at top schools. They are sourced at their villages and if they pass the screening test, then they are selected for an all expenses trip to Singapore with full scholarships.

Perhaps it is because the younger they are, the more likely they are going to stay in Singapore upon graduation? Those who have stayed long enough in their home countries know the potential and benefits of returning, or know which their preferred destinations are.

Its TRUE cos I've friends from China as well. I verify with them and they have indeed been invited by Unis and Polys in Singapore, offering free lodging, school & pocket money. SO UNFAIR!

F*** up isn't it? We support them, and they betrayed us. WTF. Some people, they got support, they don't do their job to serve rightfully for the people, that's bad enough but abuse the people support, abuse their power at the expenses of its people... It is time for them to have a feel of betrayal... Enough said.

i heard another theory is because they wan to increase the chinese population in singapore because singaporean chinese have really low birth rate while other races have alot higher birth rates.. with this gg on, coupled with singapore being surrounded by countries of other races, in no time [wave] .... and i think its quite well known that lao lee dun really like them...

eh disclaimer: this is wat i heard and in no way i am racist ... I DO NOT agree that thing should be this way too..

This is what the Singpapore government wants, and most of these PRC scholars will stay in Singapore and have kids here.

I am one of the PRC scholars.

do u know prc women have the culture of not flushing used toilet paper? in china they have a bin for them the throw, be it just small biz, big biz or red biz. that's why china toilets stink.

our public toilets are starting to stink as well!! esp our shopping centre ones :( female toilets have a sanitary bin for sanitary pads, not for them to pile soiled toilet paper. most of them can't even be bother to throw INSIDE the bin just on top of it.

i am seriously grossed out. 入乡随俗 rite? sg toilet bowls got very powderful flushing system one lor.

I think that's similar to Taiwan where people don't flush their used toilet paper and just throw into the bin. Some of their toilets also have weak flush. However, I've found the flush to be fine for toilet paper and crap. Obviously, common sense, if the toilet can flush solid waste, it can flush reasonable amounts of toilet paper. So why the heck are they leaving their used toilet paper in bins where it's so unhygienic?

I asked a Taiwanese woman and she said it's because people cannot differentiate between toilet paper and sanitary napkin. I took it to mean that she is saying that the "people" are stupid.

How can toilet paper and sanitary napkin Not be able to be differentiated?

I asked a Taiwanese guy friend whether it was true that toilet paper cannot be flushed down the bowl? I said a hotel I was staying in even has a sign that says don't throw toilet paper into the bowl. I flushed used toilet paper anyway and it's fine. He said it's not a rule, people just say it and flushing toilet paper is fine.

A note however, is that, it's true for some toilets that too much toilet paper can clog up the flushing. Some of the toilets are really weird with a divider in between that prevents solid waste or toilet paper from going in. Such a toilet can be found at a "hotel" on Alishan mountain.

You don't want to know what happened when solid waste couldn't be flushed away and just stayed there until the plumber came...

Oddly, comparing the places in Taiwan with SG, I would say the Taiwanese toilets are surprisingly cleaner and drier (except for the bin thing). Maybe SG toilets are dirtier now because of foreigners or maybe...

I have been following everything very closely here though just to know more about Singapore. As beling a FT myself, i have few points to share.

Yes, Singaporeans should be given all or most of the chances for better education, scholarships, or should send them to foreign countries for more better education in few cases, it is their right and should get it.As far as foreign talents are concerned, there are usually 2 types of professions where (1) you can utilize anyone as the task requires same customized procedures (2) task requires unique input and everytime using 1 medium or another. In every country, you wil always find almost80% jobs that falls under category 1.To hire a foreign talent for such task is useless, and the worst is, to hire them so as to get them for lesser salaries.People will misuse these options.

Huh?

so those born and bred locally have to fight it all out, prove our track records just to secure a local uni scholarship. while FTs just get INVITED WITH EVERYTHING PAID FOR to study at our uni?

come on lor, sg got many more poor families who cant even afford good education to their kids and our govt is treating these families transparent. these are the standards we get from multi-million paid ministers?

looks like my "Pinky" is worse off than a "Greeny" (not the one we hold for 2 years)..

many more good 5 years ahead. we are screwed.

Please take a good look at the page you are referring to, it says "Research Staff". These people are in a very specific area of research (photonics), and if you look at research labs anywhere around the world - be it Cambridge, Harvard, ANY university - the research groups are ALWAYS full of people from all nations and ethnicities. That is the nature of research, it is an INTERNATIONAL playground.

Here's an example of research staff in Harvard, take a good look at how not all of them are Americans:

http://www.aranylab.org/people.htm

Sure, we can hire all Singaporeans in our local research lab, but then our competitiveness will never rival that of the top universities. If we insist on hiring only Singaporeans, we would be no better than Malaysia's bumiputera system. And you seen how well that policy works for Malaysia - despite all their resources, they remain slow in growth, high in corruption, a lot more backwards than Singapore. Think about it -would you rather Singapore companies hire only Singaporeans, but be laughed at by the world for how lousy their work is?
