Mockngbrd Supersonic May 2, 2011 Share May 2, 2011 real arnot sia... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-13256676 Al-Qaeda founder and leader Osama Bin Laden is dead, according to US officials. The US is in possession of Bin Laden's body, the reports say. President Barack Obama is due to make a statement shortly. Bin Laden is top of the US most wanted list. He is accused of being behind a number of atrocities, including the attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001. The al-Qaeda leader was killed in a mansion outside Islamabad in an operation based on actionable US intelligence, CNN reported.

1fast1 Supersonic May 2, 2011 Share May 2, 2011 (edited) Interesting that this happens so soon after the appointment of Gen Petraeus as Dir, CIA. The Pakistanis were apparently unhappy with his appointment (Petraeus was very critical of Pak's support of anti-American Afghani militants). So both the US and Pak had a motive to reduce mutual embarrassment. A few possibilities: 1) OBL is not dead and this is just a convenient smokescreen - I think this is a highly implausible conspiracy theory. Very unlikely the USA would risk spinning a yarn like this without any truth behind it. 2) OBL is really dead, but it happened a while back, and both sides were just looking for the right time to release the news - a bit more likely, going by the convenient timing, but with the freedom of the US press, it's dangerous for them to risk this sort of subterfuge. 3) OBL is really dead, and it just happened (the story is completely factual). I suppose this is still the most likely scenario. Not that unlikely, considering that the Pakistanis probably knew all along how to find OBL, and they just decided to help out US intelligence to ensure that the tensions surrounding their support of anti-American militants would be alleviated.
