But i suppose this is an age old debate that will see no end and that million dollar ministar salaries remain UNIQUELY SINGAPOREAN. I was told this was to prevent corruption. So that can only mean the other political leaders in other civilised countries who are willing to accept 10% of the salaries of our million dollar ministars must also all be corrupt.

You're stating something with a flaw In logic as is the original quote. A low salary doesn't necessarily mean corruption and vice versa.

The key is integrity has been monetized and that is the real tragedy.

Agreed although there is no way to know what proportion of his current salary is due to his political contacts and what proportion is due to his competencies but that wasn't the question I was replying to. The question was as follows:

While we would never know the exact proportion due to his political contacts, my take is it is a major component. Remember he was the Foreign Affairs minister. His contacts with other countries, especially their diplomats and government officials would open many doors for his current company. His experience in international diplomacy is also invaluable in negotiations. Compare this with say, the Home Affairs minister or Social & Family Development minister, I doubt they can find such openings in the private sector, much less command such high salary.

Post GE 2011, ministers took 30% pay cut liao, you must allow 30% more lapses in your expectations to be fair to ministers hokay....

People will pay ex politicians because of the contacts they have and doors they can open.

The right question is, how much can George earn if he wasn't an ex minister? Would his current employers even entertain him?

He didn't become a minister because he was worth millions.

He's worth millions BECAUSE he is an EX minister.

The goal post had been shifted.

If there were many, the Govt would have related it to justify their salaries.

I think the fact only George made any headway says a lot already.

We need to know how many ex-minister left the parliament and still continue working first.

People don't want to join Mafia. But if you offer them a million dollars. . They might.

Question.

You offer million dollars to overcome people's financial needs and talent?

Or you offer million dollars to overcome people's reluctance to join Mafia?

Is money and talent really the barrier?

There are good man a plenty, who refuse to serve the pap and their vision.

Just like if a nasty customer comes to you, you quote a ridiculous price to justify not wanting to do business with them.

Honestly.

How many actually earned million dollar salaries before joining politics ??

Most of those who hold high office are scholars who went into the civil sector right after NS or uni. So, no, I would guess 90% would not be earning close to millions before joining politics since they are already in civil service at a young age.

Wonder how credible is it for mcfers to grade the ministers that we have. I only know my teachers, superiors or peers can grade me, and this people are usually better than me if not equal. If you think you are that good, go join politic instead of kpkb here.

What you say is not logical at all. We are a democratic country and we all have the right to "grade" these ministers who work for us. The basis of our political system is that each of us has one vote.

Further, why do we need to be better than someone in order to grade them? When I eat my chicken rice, I can tell whether the food is good or bad without necessarily being a better cook than the hawker.

hehe very appropriate analogy using simple understanding of supplier and customer relationship in the chicken rice stall. can be extended to the political officer holder who is the supplier and the stakeholders are us who are the customers.

even if the customers are not fully understanding the difficulties faced by the suppliers, it doesn't run away from the fact that the suppliers failed to meet the very objective of their existence which is to deliver satisfactory product or services to their customers.

One policy that I judge to be poorly conceived is the latest 40 percent loan policy. It is meant to discourage car ownership for those who cannot afford the down payment. Although it achieves this objective, but it creates another set of problem for a large group of people. Those who cannot afford the hefty down payment will then have to turn to buy used car, and because of this, the used car dealers jack up the price of used car, and the depreciation of used car is as high or higher than new car, even though the value is lower. thwre are people who cannot hefty down payment but they also need a car.

This side effect only benefit the used car dealer as they can hold the used car buyers ransom. If you can't afford new car then you have no choice but to buy used car even at same high depreciation.

See this type of policy ? Solve one problem but create another bigger problem for the people. Who suffer ? The people. Don't ask me what is the solution, ask the million dollar salaried ministers. They should come up with something much more creative than this half baked policy.
