GE: PAP's Marine Parade GRC team proposes buddy system among its MPs

By S Ramesh | Posted: 23 April 2011 1427 hrs

SINGAPORE : Residents in Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency (GRC) stand to gain from the services of not one but two Members of Parliament if the People's Action Party (PAP) team emerges victorious in the coming General Election.

Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said he plans to implement a "buddy system" amongst the other four candidates in the GRC.

He was speaking to the media at the Marine Parade division on Saturday.

The Marine Parade GRC team kicked off the morning with a visit to the MacPherson division.

Mr Goh said the area's candidate, Tin Pei Ling, is easily recognisable and that is a good sign.

Ms Tin said: "Age is not the main issue or the main focus point. The main thing is about the willingness to listen to them and do my part to help them to pool together the resources and help them solve their problems.

"Some of the issues they have raised include the cost of living; it is true the prices have been rising. But recently, I have called for a meeting between the merchants and hawkers and through the discussions, they have kindly agreed to keep the prices stable for the next six months.

"I hope this is good news for residents here, so that it will help to alleviate the pressures that they are facing with the prices."

And voters in the entire GRC have been promised the services of two advisors in each division.

Mr Goh plans to have Dr Fatimah Lateef partner Ms Tin at the Meet-the-People sessions in both the MacPherson and Geylang Serai divisions. Brigadier-General Tan Chuan-Jin and Seah Kian Peng will do likewise.

Mr Goh explained: "Fatimah will partner Pei Ling to give good services to the MacPherson and Geylang Serai. So they work as a buddy, which means they have to do cross MPS (Meet-the-People sessions).

"Once in a month, Fatimah would have to go to MacPherson and likewise, Pei Ling has got to go to Geylang Serai. This way, we have a buddy. Likewise Seah Kian Peng and Tan Chuan-Jin work as a pair. Myself, they all help me.

"Two MPs would now be very familiar with two wards. Whereas if you have only one MP covering one ward, only one MP is familiar."

There has been much talk that the battle in Marine Parade GRC would turn out to be a battle between the two youngest women candidates in the ruling party's and opposition's teams. But Senior Minister Goh said it is the entire team that is going into battle and their manifestos that matter.

Mr Goh said: "In my case, our team is known as Team Marine Parade. I am the leader of Team Marine Parade and I have four other members. Likewise, we should look at the NSP (National Solidarity Party) team. I think the team leader from what I can see is Cheo Chai Chen. Cheo Chai Chen has served in Parliament for one term and he is the most experienced.

"Therefore, I look at the team led by me and four other members and I look at the team led by Cheo Chai Chen on the other side and find out what can they do for the people over here. We have a track record, but the past is the past."

The PAP's Marine Parade team has, in addition to the party's national manifesto, its own manifesto - to make the division Great, Gracious, Generous and Green, into a 4G Home.
