Hi,

I have this problem here. Today i send my car for regular servicing. When my mechanic release the oil cap ( where the engine oil is poured into via that opening ). I can see steam coming out from that opening.

My mechanic says that it is due to the heat cannot disperse properly through the engine vent. That why it is giving off steam. The reason is that the outlet has been choked and he say to rectify this, he has to take the engine apart and wash off the (OIL WHICH HAS BEEN TURN SOLID) so that the engine can breath properly. He also say that it a kind of engine overhaul. See what spare parts need to changed, for example : Piston ring ... etc etc ..........He say the total cost will be around $1200 to $1500 (depending on the spare parts he changes.

Do you guys recommend to go for a overhaul ( since my car is nearing 10 years ) and COE has been extended for another 10?

If you guys recommend , what will be the cost ? AGAR AGAR

Which workshop will be a good place to change ?

why dun you go down to scrap yards or imported engine dealer to get a used engine?

your mech will know what to do with the serial no.

but sometimes it depend on luck as to get a good engine but most imported engine from japan are pretty new.

He is my regular mechanic. Just that i needed 2nd or 3rd opinion on these things. When the engine is not assemble properly, it going to cause big problem.

I got con by another mechanic on my air con last yr. Thought my father knew him many years. but he still KO TOH me when my dad is not around. .........sigh !!!!

If you do regular flushing, continue flushing will do no harm by keeping the engine clean.

Alot of times, cars more than 5 yrs never do engine flushing & using low quality engine oil... flushing will remove the plugged dirt / sludge that kinda seals the engine. This type of engines flushing will lead to engine oil leaks & other problems. Flush with care.

Dilemma right ?

If not go to popular & reliable workshop (Initials: RV) & see what they say.

Your piston or piston ring or piston land has kaput if you see white smoke coming out from the engine oil.

does your rad water goes down constantly??? either is piston ring or the head gasket if engine "drinks water" an over haul would be necessary..... 1k plus is about the price

When you just shut down the engine, its normal to see abit of smoke come out of the engine oil fill up hole. Cos its hot. If there is alot alot of smoke then that may be a problem. Instead of asking us, proceed to another reputable workshop and seek a second opinion.

To me if there is only abit of smoke, then its NORMAL. no need overhaul or whatsoever.

which car are U driving?

Jap made Corolla.

It a good car, bring you efficiently from Point A and Point B easily. But somehow as it ages, it becomes more thirsty as it drinks more petrol. Lose of power also, need to step onto the accelerator more.

if the car don't 'drinks' water & oil,& can start easily,DO NOT do anything, anyway old car, when you 'open' the engine, sure more things you need to change.!Most mechanic told you to do major job just to earn your $$$$...

My mechanic was very helpful & with lots of experienced of up to 20 yrs till date that and he would able to give you an adise. (It;s better to seek or 3rd party advise. Need help ?? (Can you imagine, he could tear an 1960 Mercedes of "SE" plate apart & refurbish & replaced old wiring hardness ?? That's how good he was.

By the way, how old was your Stream ? I don't think you need to strip the enigine apart and conduct the overhaul at all !

The below-mentioned symptoms are the tell-tale sign that your car engine has lost compression, if I were not mistaken.

1. Probably, as what the forumers' advice. Go for engine flush which it the cheapest option U have. but I think it could not solve the problem.

2. If it does not resolve, then U should go to reputable car workshop. Ask them for assesment. if they do compression test, then they will advise U accordingly after the test.

2a. Worst case, they have to kui engine block for. I think the labour is about $800-$1.5k. Then the workshop will tell U change the engine components and that where U overhaul or rebuild your engine including change timing belt, water pump and etc. If they found the cylinder wall has scraping, then U need to do rebore the wall and get the oversize piston. The total part cost will be from 2k to 5k.

2b. If U find overhaul engine it too costly, then U should look for a new engine or a used engine.

I hope the information helps.
