Is it possible to visually look at the brake pad and tell it has been wear out or need to remove the rim in order to check whether it needs to change?

pls advice.

What ride is that? Maybe same car make and model owners can help if you specify it? Past rides I had all possible to see the thickness of pad leftover.

If easily visible only, and not all equally visible. Often a rumbling sound when you drive/brake alert you to look out for it.

Screeching sound. Once I saw in the middle of the pad there is a small circle made of different compound that will emit sound when come in contact with disc. These circles are only exposed and visible when the pad is getting thin. It's like placed there purposely as a warning.

Professional Mech use a thickness gauge to check.

------------------------------------------------------------------

This gauge set helps to identify brake lining that need attention.

Colour Coded like traffic lights.

Green for Go - 8mm 10mm 12mm

Yellow for Cautious - 4mm 5mm 6mm

Red for Stop & Replacement 2mm 3mm

diff cars have diff designs....some cars allow brake pad to be visible easily, but for other cars, it's darn hard to get a good look at the pad.

It's difficult to gauge the pad thickness without the wheel taken out.

so must take out rim to check la. cos when collecting my ride after servicing at AD, the mech told me my brakepad about to wear off but i see the pad still quite meaty.

I believe most men will treat their ride as their wife, so normally men will not like their wives' pads to be view so openly by others right? [cool]

Cant see the other brake pads behind the discs. Usually this side worn out much faster than the other pads placed outside. Edited by 5936

Try using a torchlight to shine into the gap between the spokes of the wheel rim, where the disc brake is located. Depending on the gap spaces, you may be able to see that the brake pad and brake mechanism are slightly different colors.

When I send my ride for tyres rotate/balance, I will visually check the front disc pads and the rear drum brake linings. The ws will also blow the dust from the rear drum brake.
