Air-con: Inverter VS non-inverter

I read a couple of articles online which mentioned that tangible savings comes only when the air-con operates for a prolonged period of time in a day.

 

However, if it is used for just a couple of hours a day, the savings will be negligible and in actuality will be negated by the higher selling price of an inverter unit.

 

The article provided some calculations though i cant recall if it was in a local context.

 

Are these really true? Can someone who have used both inverter and non inverter units, comment?

I have both. It seems the non-inverter one but with more energy saving stars use less energy.

I had a Fujitsu inverter 1-split for a couple of years.

Then I added a 2nd Sanyo non-inverter 1-split. This one has more "stars" rated.

It seems the electrical bill didn't go up more than 2x.

 

My usage for both is about 10 hrs each day.

 

I would suggest you just get the normal one with more energy saving stars instead of an inverter type, if the cost is too high.

Whether inverter or non-inverter, I think with proper maintenance and temp set at 25 or more, any aircon shd be able to cool the room efficiently and save electricity.

buy inverter if u need to switch on more than 1 aircon at the same time.

 

otherwise, a non inverter will do.

I can't remember how many ticks the Fuji has.

I only know I didn't get the "savings" I was hoping for.

 

But I think nowadays, just look for those with more ticks and it should be quite efficient.

do you notice your electricity bills going down after switching to inverter type? Mine didn't. I have this impression that the Power Company do bill projection. Do they really charge you for what you use?

Ultimately depends on your usage.....just like getting a hybrid car..if your mileage is very low..wat is the point of paying so much for the technology to save fuel.

Inverter is good for those who uses the air-con often, and also 2-3 rooms at various loads.

Inverter is similar to variable frequencies....it varies the fan coil performance according to number of rooms in use.

Non-inverter will operate at the same speed, no matter 2-3 rooms are in use. So if only one room is in use, then the non-inverter one will be 'over' sized and wasting electricity.

 

Anyway...how long can a typical air-con system last? 5 years or 10 years?

My parents house, unit is already 8 years old (seldom use...mainly during CNY).

Do you think its time to change to a inverter type?

You are like my neighbour downstair. Open air-con big big.

My floor very cold due to my neighbour's air-con downstair.

I use sponge mattress type to sleep, shiok shiok.

Free cooling.

price bet inverter and non-inverter should be $800 - $1k plus. The savings depend on the usage.

 

you need to ask yourself (or a honest seller) whether your usage will be heavy enough to cover the the upfront higher price.

 

recently, I bought a system 4 daikin non-inverter (3 ticks). The seller asked me not to get a inverter since at most, I will be switching on the aircon for 1 room for about 8hrs daily. Most of the time, will be hapzard usage for the other rooms. Unless using 2 or more rooms for more than 10 hrs per day, he will then recommend the inverter instead.
