Toapayohkid 1st Gear April 4, 2011 Share April 4, 2011 The Transport Minister should ensure that our world class transport system should include accident prevention measures. If a person jump down deliberately, a lot of us will say it's the individual fault. But an open platform is giving opportunity for an accident to happen. There are already so many cases of accidents happening on MRT stations, but why gates are constructed only at selected stations? Does it mean the rest are safe? i now what you are saying but if people want to kill themselves, they will kill themselves. we don't make it easy to sell knives then. must get licence to buy knives. in new york or london, also got no platform doors. this accident was a bloody tragedy but it does not mean must over-react. Tigerwoods Turbocharged April 4, 2011 Share April 4, 2011 joseph, in this instance of the girl falling off the MRT track - I would like you to relook at the whole picture... 1. The AMK station (just as Jurong east and many other stations) gets overcrowded super fast, the moment one of the trains get delayed. So its possible people are pushed to the edge without recourse. 2. The barriers to prevent accidents have been approved and supposed to have been built - yet strangely, in this world best transport system, they still have not been installed. It's been donkey years since the approval has been given - what's taking so long? 3. This is just a 14 year old girl - a Thai who does not really understand English or the other 3 official languages of singapore - to put the whole blame on her for our inadequacies is also wrong. Is the same pattern as the Lift thingy...
Mike1234 1st Gear April 4, 2011 Share April 4, 2011 it is a fact you are right. but i dont understand why common sense on safety become a LTA issue when its is common sense. notice that its only recently years that we have so many cases?? why last time dont have?? I agree Safety have to depends on each of every individual... However, it takes two hands to clap.... As installing these gates would be able to prevent accidents which in this case seemed more like an accident than a sucide case....

Since the cases of people falling down the platform onto the MRT tracks(be it accidentally or suicidal) are significantly increasing..Im sure it makes sense to have some preventive measures put up. 10 years ago and 10 years later things changes.. now with so many Foriegn friends around..our PT is really much crowded then before. Isn't there a higher chance of people being accidentally pushed down? Last time also don't have so many entertainment, IPOD, Iphone, etc.. ppl may be to engrossed and accidentally fall? Ya its common sense, that one should be responsible for their own safety..but by setting up some preventive measures, it may end up saving some lives.. isn't it worth it? Toapayohkid 1st Gear April 4, 2011 Share April 4, 2011 not putting a blame on her. but dont tell me you dont think its common sense not to stand so close the the edge? not knowing a language is not a problem, not knowing what is dangerous is the problem. 14 years old is old enough to know the consequence. but the main issue i am pointing to is, why is the blame solely on LTA when in actual facts, the communter did not practise common sense? yes. common sense not to stand near the edge. however, she is probably from rural area in thailand. if she was from bkk long enough, urban jungle common sense would be there. There are already so many cases of accidents happening on MRT stations, but why gates are constructed only at selected stations? Does it mean the rest are safe? actually they are not constructed at selected stations, they are in the progress of intergration. do note that gates of that scale typically take 8 weeks or more to produce, and if its produce oversea, it make more sense to only ship it in when in bulk to save on logistic cost. Back to prevention measure, frankly speaking, apart from those who want to commit sucide. i will not be able to envision that there are so many ppl who have to common sense and stand so close to the track (on a packed plateform one aside of couse.) but most of the accident seems to be happening in not so crowded area. BTW, in case ppl forget, there is already an emergency button on the plateform for you to press when ppl fell in. if i am not wrong, it will halt all MRT (at least this is what i remember when first taught to me 20 years ago.) question is, why so many ppl there no one press button? It make take 8 weeks to produce the gates... and say another 6 months to ship them on a slow boat from china.. but the approval has been given YEARS ago... what's taking so long to install them? It's only end last year they had the orchard floods.. but in just a few months the whole road in orchard fitted with anti flood devices, whole road raised, even rochor road near sim lim now machiam fortress... If they can do all this so fast - which merely saves money - why the lower priority on installing accident barriers on MRT - because it only saves peasant lives?
