if you're referring to must be singapore-born, no such law. khaw boon wan was malaysian too, born in penang.

if you're referring to minister must be from ruling party, i believe there's no such law too. just that singapore politics too petty to allow a good opposition member to be a minister. it'll also cause unhappiness for aspiring PAP members who did not make minister ("why should i work so hard for you?")

Its a sad day today for me to learn that Talents must join ruling party to serve the nation one...

All the minister are under PAP is because they have more than 2/3 of the available seats so they can form the government. If this GE come with freak result where PAP could not win 2/3 of the seats, then they will have to form the gov with the next highest number of opp party to form the gov. And by then they will have to give up at least 1 ministry for the opp party to control. Which could be why they keep increasing the number of constituency so that even more opposition are in the parliament, they still have 2/3 of the overall seat available and can still control the Gov

yep.. won't be surprised if they keep increasing the number of constituencies until each block of flats have one MP.

Still can't believe this tiny country not bigger than a lake in New Zealand needs 87 MPs. Most of them keep quite in parliament anyway, instead of raising issues relevent to their constituents interests...

Now the question is, will PAP start a character assassination again, like for example questioning his motives, whenever we have someone that good from the alternative parties? Thats what I notice whenever PAP cannot handle such person.

somehow i sense that everyone is the miw camp subscribes to the 'kill-by-all-means' tactics in dealing with oppositions which they perceive as 'threats'... but those who do so are the one with the power, you know who, if these few characters say 'kill', the rest will just follow............. so we see demfamation law suits, we see bankrupcies, etc etc. Sad but true.............. dont they have better thing to do then to kill to 'preserve' their 'reputations'.... true gold will shine no matter how fierce the fire is................ do we have true/pure gold that deserve million dollars price tags? ....... maybe a few, but not the whole jing gang wholesale million dollars package

What makes you think they have not achieved that, though they may not be official ones? [laugh][laugh]

But seriously it is getting ridiculously to have more & more MPs: Elected MPs, Nominated MPs & Non-Constituency MPs. Maybe the future Parliament sessions have to be held at the new Kallang Sports Stadium liao...

What we need are quality stuff/staff, not those making up the numbers via GRC....

Maybe he will be the "zhuge liang" of wp.

He can set the stage for 2 kingdoms here, but of cos the stronger wei will still prevail in the end.

from the look of the interview so far. PAP favour WP to be their rival compare to other party. Which i think the reason is pretty obvious.

Wow.. This guy is very impressive... Perhaps the only oppo party that has a real chance of snatching a grc is wp. Imagine he and sylvia in aljunied. They stand a really good chance. Besides him, i tink wp has other good candidates in its midst.. LTK is just keeping it mum..

Thanks for reminding me - I have a damn funny anecdote to relate pertaining to this. This really happened, more or less, a short while back to a friend (the resident) of my dad - but I'm paraphrasing.

(MIW contingent makes its vote-grubbing rounds, all smiles. Knocks on resident's door. Resident opens door).

MIW: HELLO!! I have good news. We are going to upgrade your facilities by giving you a new lift that stops at every floor! Isn't that wonderful?

Resident: OK...

MIW: Yes! We are going to close down the lift landing on this side of the building, that only goes to certain floors, and build a brand new one on the other side, that stops at every floor!

Resident: Wait...you're going to remove the lift landing on *my* side of the building?

MIW: Yah...

Resident: ...which *already* comes to my floor. And you're going to give me one on the other side that I now have to walk much further to and from?!

MIW: Unfortunately, this is how it is...

Resident: Then screw you! My vote is going to the Opposition!

MIW: ...

The MIW has nothing to say in response and just looks stunned. The resident closes his door on the contingent.

Awesome, isn't it? [laugh]

It all boils down to personal needs and expectations doesn't it? It is understandable why this friend of your dad is unhappy. The current lift, while not stopping on every floor, stops on his floor at his side of the building. Having a new lift which benefit more people by stopping on every floor, doesn't benefit him as he now has to walk further. So he lost out, and he is furious about it. Is it reasonable to hope that he might be willing to give up a little of his convenience so that more in his building might benefit? I guess this is a question all of us ask ourselves each and everytime a policy goes against us, or does not benefit us directly. Ultimately, every person answers that question according to his/her own needs, experiences and expectation. One man's meat, another man's poison. [:)]

Having lost his vote, how many would miw gain? To secure his vote, how many might miw lose? That is the question that both the miw and the oppo hopefuls need to balance in their mind for every decision big and small, because it is simply not possible to please everybody.

I think the main issue he wants to highlight is the "stupidity" and "insensitivity" of the miw to mention this to an affected home owner during a visit, imho.

However, Show Mao served NS after A-level despite being borned in Taiwan and could have just gone over to the US after A-level. Most foreign borned students in those days will leave for US or UK before or immediately after A-level.

He is a FT new citizen? He is not born and bred Singaporean? [lipsrsealed][laugh]

Well, if they didn't go, then the unhappiness would be of them not even having the courtesy to inform him of a decision that affects him, wouldn't it. It's one of those do oso die, dun do oso die scenarios. [laugh] The forum have many examples.
