Just a cheap alternative to in car recorder!

I was just thinking; if a driver is only looking at recording thru the windscreen when he/she starts driving and end recording when he/she stops driving, isn't it easier and cheaper to just get a cellphone holder and use your cellphone to record?

dont forget the wide angle lens coverage.

i don't think phone cameras are able to have wide angle coverage, meaning u run a risk of the video recording not capturing the full pictuer of the accident.

Either get a wide angle phone [laugh] or just extend as far as possible from the windscreen with your holder [idea] . For back also can use another holder to record [laugh] . Can do HD and much cheaper!

its too tedious.

everytime u need to put ur phone, set it up, and record.

consume battery, u can charge i know.

but still... its too tedious plus the specs.... say at night recording? raining? wide angle? run out of video space? etc

u'll be working for the car. not the car working for u

haha u r speaking with too idealistic outlook.

u extend back you think how clear is it going to be?

plus extending back means either the front passenger/driver lean left or right will block the view. not forgetting u must find a way to secure the phone in the middle of the car

if need to record both front and back? [laugh] [laugh]

back on use phone, front one use proper in car recorder la

the logic is simple, in frontal accidents, there is always a lot of disputes about who cut into who's lane. so the wide angle is required to capture the movements at the side.

in rear accidents, there's no disputing from the left rear or right rear. it is placed there only to safeguard the case of you not being able to copy down the licence plate of the offender or he claims you reverse into him. a phone camera mounted at the centre of the rear windscreen would be sufficient, if inded you want to cover the risk of the rear as well.

and don't ask me how to cover the risk at the left and right side [:p]

i am using an old handphone (no sim card) for that purpose. just need to buy a car charger, problem solved.

back no need. if people bang mustank's backside, i probably wave off all charges [cool]

Haha, actually just finished all my stuff and pretty free that's why think of this [laugh] . Can also place 2 holders on both sides so the cams can record from both corners, sure can cover more than 180 degrees. For extending, just use the edge of the dashboard as the limit, don't think it's useful to extend all the way beyond that [laugh]

I actually used my phone to record previously before getting the recorder. [:p]

The problem was no "loop recording" aka "auto-delete older files". You got to access the phone every now n then to delete old recordings.

Also there is no auto start feature.

And u wana risk having ur windows smashed because of a HP???

haha i will give you a scenario.

example a car cuts in from your left. your left camera may be able to capture the car but not the licence plate due to the angle it cuts in and some visual obstruction (like being too close that the view of the licence plate is hidden beneath.

of course subsequently as the car moves further ahead and into the front centre view of your car, the licence plate may be captured by the right camera.

laws in the court would not allow you to edit the 2 videos into one so how are you going to proof the car in the left video segment is the same car in the right video segment.

if the insurer is reasonable they will accept 2 video evidences, if they are not reasonable, they will reject having to piece the 2 video evidence together.
