Latka 1st Gear March 22, 2011 Share March 22, 2011 Finally, a letter dat makes sense. But unfortunately, though the oil cartel her is guilty on all levels of anti competive behaviour, gahmen don't give a fark for selfish reasons. ST Forum Mar 23, 2011 Watchdog should monitor pump prices THE Government recently formed a price watchdog, the Retail Price Watch Group, to scrutinise excessive price increases of daily necessities and anti-competitive behaviour by businesses. However, motorists are subject to the whims of petrol 'cartels' which raise pump prices. Caltex took the lead on Monday to raise petrol prices by three cents a litre and diesel prices by five cents a litre ('Caltex raises pump prices on costlier crude'; yesterday). If past behaviour is any indication, the other petrol firms are likely to follow suit. I urge the price watchdog to monitor pump prices and help to maintain fair prices for motorists. Elgar Lee Will the so called Retail Price Watch Group really cares about the pump price hikes? I don't think so...would not dare to "break the MIW golden rice bowl"..only knows how to "bully" the tour bus agencies. Can't even do any things about the hawker rising prices.. Assaxefour 1st Gear March 23, 2011 Share March 23, 2011 "watch dog". The key word is "dog", What kind of dog will it be? Obedient or fierce barking type?

Sabretan 4th Gear March 23, 2011 Share March 23, 2011 yes that is the right question to ask. What type of dog? A toothless dog? A blind dog? An obedient dog? Or a Crazy dog? or the silent one rhat kills w a bite? A watch-dog body is only as effective as the most powerful member on its board. So don't put too much hope into it. SimonTan 2nd Gear March 23, 2011 Share March 23, 2011 Watch for what? Its still DIRT cheap by liquid standard! If one cna accept this...... One can of Soft drinks (330ml) at coffee shop already costs $1.3 ($1.6 at aircon foodcourt). Convert it to one liter, it cost about $3.93 per liter. Those people who worry about expensive fuel, should actually ask the watchdog to take note of drinking such expensive liquids too!!

Kiadaw 6th Gear March 23, 2011 Share March 23, 2011 I remeber back in 2008, there was a period when the price of crude oil shoot up as well, & many pump increase their prices After that, BP, in their finacial report posted recorded profit for the year (or something), & got shot by the then U.K PM, Gordon Brown. He said BP was inrespsonsible & big companies have the obligation to serve the community & society as well, & should not capitalise on the oil crisis, during the credit crunch. I also remember reading sometime back that the PM (think is the current one, Camaron) urge the oil companies not to raise the pump price unless alsolutely necessey as it will increase the burdun on a lot of people. Totally unlike our "hands off" goverment. Wasn't it just a while ago that don't know which minister said, we should let market forces didate the price of housings, when people complain about the ever increase housing prices. Kar_lover Supercharged March 23, 2011 Share March 23, 2011 Watchdogs are usually required only when the industry is not a very transparent one. But in petrol, all change in prices are announced openly in the news. There is nothing to watch.
Unfair 3rd Gear March 23, 2011 Share March 23, 2011 Wayang ! Govt wants to reduce cars on road, earn from petrol tax, have refineries on jurong island. The companies have free hands on 'deciding' the prices and no one will touch them !
Hermitage 1st Gear March 23, 2011 Share March 23, 2011 how to bite the hand that feeds it? Simple and so very True! The oil cartels control the government to an extent that would undoubtedly shock the general public. Why do you think diesel/biodiesel or hybrid/electric cars are so expensive? Why are we penalised for wanting to own a "greener" car, when we really should be thinking about viable alternatives to crude oil (a limited, diminishing, non-renewable source) as fuel? The technology to use these alternative sources of energy have been available since 1893, some 120 years ago!! The fact that in Singapore, these alternative-fueled cars cost more than their petrol equivalents already tells it's own story for those willing to look behind the veil and see the truth. The multi-billion dollar profit oil corporations discourage their use for obvious reasons and...they have all the support they need. Our vision for the nation is in fact very myopic, failing to see beyond what would benefit us in the foreseeable future (our own, and our childrens' lifetimes). Also, no one dares to take the lead in pushing forward such a proposition, 'cos you'd be up against these billion dollar cartels. However, it is the people, it is us, who will eventually have to make a stand. It is not impossible. As a matter of fact, some countries have already been sucessful at it! Sweden for example, has a policy that promotes and even subsidises the use of alternative fuels and the vehicles which use them. They have collective a vision to be petrol free by 2020. And all because the people rallied for a change, for a better tommorrow for their children to live in. So, that brings us back to South East Asia and Singapore. Would you be the first?? Think about this quote: "When the people lead, the leaders will follow." - Ghandi ↡ Advertisement
