SIX in 10 Singaporeans agree with all the measures in this year's Budget, down from seven in 10 last year.

But more - nearly eight in 10 - feel the Budget generally benefits citizens like themselves. This is up from more than six in 10 last year.

These are some of the key findings of the annual Budget poll conducted by Reach, the government feedback unit. A total of 887 Singaporeans aged 18 years and above were surveyed over the telephone from Feb 22 to March 1.

Dr Amy Khor, chairman of Reach, said that the different Budgets addressed different issues and could not be compared strictly on approval ratings. 'Last year's was against a backdrop of the economic downturn and it was to help everyone get through the challenges they faced,' she said in an interview with The Sunday Times. 'This time, the Budget was a lot more focused and more targeted in helping people cope with inflation.'

The most popular measure this year was the scrapping of radio and television licence fees, which garnered an approval rating of 94 per cent. Also popular were the education subsidies, Medisave top-ups for older Singaporeans, and additional rebates for utilities and service and conservancy charges. All these scored above 90 per cent.

Dr Khor said most Singaporeans, especially families and the elderly, would find such measures helpful.

It seems that it's very easy to satisfy Singaporeans... just bribe them with a few hundred bucks, and you can buy their consensus for anything. I don't know whether it's because they are so pliant and money faced... or is it because they are so desperately hungry, even $600-800 is like a fortune to them.

You need to see the whole budget as a whole and not because of the up to 800 one will receive. I'm one of the happy ones because there's a lot of benefits for the low incomes and needy. These are the people the govt needs to help every year. those who only see the 800 are the truly selfish people who only wants everything for themselves

They always say "no free lunch" but turnaround and give you a few hundreds. You believe it?

So you feel that the government has sufficently looked after the low income and needy in this budget?

I may be the "selfish" one but they are the one who got their 8 month bonus and the 20~30% pay increment.

The amount of their bonuses and increment can truly helped alot of the needy as it is cold hard cash, not some topup into the CPF account.

In your own words, they are the truly selfish people who only wants everything for themselves , or you are one of them? -_-

that is why we need to verify the stats.

I got a feeling the survey in done within a certain targeted group (or something along that line) to represent the entire population.

Look at the whole budget and see what they can get. From cash money to increase in housings rebates to funds for purchasing equipments for the handicapped, workfare bonus, 20% discounts in tax etc Not many people know of all these when I asked if they are happy with the budget. They can only tell me they got 800. there's a limit to how much can be given, whether sufficient enough or not is hard to judge because there's too many factors to consider. I can only say I'm generally happy with what was given although I'm not entitle to a lot of these benefits. Let's not bring in their salary into here [laugh] [laugh] that can be a separate topic for discussions. And that's my own view. You can have your own view too.

You can't ignore their salary... it's part of the Whole Budget that you mention we need to look at.

They may have given "a lot of goodies" to the general public as seen from an overall point of view. But if you go and really examine the items - you will notice that the actual beneficieries only get paltry amount each - hardly enough to sustain any inflationery increases this year. You are actually happy about this?

I would be happy if and only if there is a deliberate and sustained effort to improve the lives of the general Singaporean. Eradicate or minimise the unemployment with jobs that play well enough to sustain a singaporean family, really improve public transport (not the wayang shows they put up near the election) so that it becomes a viable alternative to private transport, really provide medical benefits so that not only the Minister of Health can pay for major ops with $8 invoices, but the rest of Singaporeans to get affordable healthcare, provide educational opportunities so that not only rich Singaporeans can afford good tuition but every kid has a chance to improve himself, and the list goes on.

You are happy with the mediocre "goodies" dished out this close to election, whilst giving themselves millions of dollars in increments. I now understand why so many people voted they were satisfied with the budget.
