Limitedspeed Neutral Newbie June 10, 2011 Share June 10, 2011 The two (2) arrows rule works every time for me. Should you (not encouraging though) be speeding towards a green light, towards the three and a half arrow your foot should be off the accelerator for speed towards 60kmh/h hence towards the second arrow if still no amber to pass or at two and half arrow may have to decide to stop if you should see amber turned on. Do not try looking out for camera caused my brother did just that and saw that there was no camera sped up and the guy in front of him stop for an amber  Always try to stay on the middle lane when drive crossing a junction that when you see any movement of bicycle or pedstrians (likely elderly folks or children) from the sides, you should stop gradually avoiding collision from the back caused you really do not know why they are crossing a red man light ↡ Advertisement

Saviourwu 1st Gear July 20, 2011 Author Share July 20, 2011 Several techniques. 1. Look at pedestrian lights. If solid green, no problems. If blinking green then must prepare. If red, its likely to change soon. 2. As usual, slow down if you are not certain. Don't go at 80KM/H and then jam brakes at the last moment. 3. Look around you. Safe to brake etc? I also check mirrors if I know I may have to brake hard (unless emergency then never). Give light taps on the brake to indicate you are slowing down. Thus the guy behind you knows you are slowing down. Do just jam brakes at last moment. Must practice defensive driving and anticipate. Then you won't be caught by surprise. i'm using your technique 1, but it doesn't always work perfectly. Some no green blinking man at all, coz no pedestrian press button.... by the way, any way to know the light taps are showing the braking lights? it's often hard to gauge brake how hard to at least show some brake light... Darthrevan Supercharged July 21, 2011 Share July 21, 2011 frankly for me it depends on situation..if traffic jam or heavy and no cars behinds i'll usually stop..if got cars tailgating me or i feel that i cannot stop in time..i'll accelerate..but all these are still subject to road conditions

Going at 60km/h, if we see amber, up till which arrow then should we accelerate through? It's all very subjective, maybe only when see no more arrow then accelerate through? Else it may seem a bit slow to clear.
Ken4555 1st Gear August 13, 2011 Share August 13, 2011 ..... seems you like to comment everyone's post as ' ' let me share my humble opinion... to stop or not depends totally on traffic situation... speed i am travelling at... and if the traffic lights got camera... as long as i estimate that i can cross the line while the lights still in amber, i'll go for it... pls dont ask me how i estimate, there are no black and white rules to stop or not to stop at amber... driving on the roads long enuf one shd hv gotten some experience... like if you noticed the lights already green since you saw them from afar then get ready to stop if you need to... if every car really drove at 50km/h on the roads, i dont think you will even need to start this thread... so long and short of it, drivers should slow down when approaching junctions traffic light end of story... Fully agree. The trick is to stick to speed limit. And if the speed limit is 70, slow down gradually to 60 when approaching junction and put in correct gear (if manual tranny). Plus, keep a safe distance in front with frequent checking of rear view mirror. You should have less hesitations at junctions. Speed limit is put up for a reason and in consideration of the road terrain and surrounding buildups. Edited May 11, 2012 by Kangadrool
I-LOVE-CARS 1st Gear May 11, 2012 Share May 11, 2012 From driving around sg roads, i had notice that our traffic light will always has this 3-4 second buffer time from the time the traffic light turns red to the time the other side turns green- *If there are no red light camera, infront of me there is no car, then I will speed up *If there are no red light camera, infront of me there is car, i will slow down as you never know if the car wan to chiong or not, if he slow down and you speed up...accident liao.. *If there is red light camera, I will guai guai slow down [laugh]

Greyminswift 1st Gear May 12, 2012 Share May 12, 2012 got this from mcf long time back. (2007) If u obeserve, there's always 3 arrows before a traffic light. Ever wonder what are these for? At times you may even see worker re-adjusting the position of these arrow. they are use especially when light is AMBER! Let me explain. ...............................................................................| |....|| .........====>..................====>...............====>.......||....|| ...............1.........................2......................3............||. ...|| .............................................................stop line (traffic junction) Direction of approach--> If Light is Amber and you are between arrow 3 and stop line, please proceed to pass. If Light is Amber and you are between arrow 2 & 3, please check yr rear view mirror and see if it is safe to brake and stop. If not speed up and pass. If light is Amber and you are between 1 & 2, DO brake and stop. Here if u still continue trying to pass (most likely Red light now) u risk the Red Light Camera (If any). Above are applied if you are travelling at the road speed limit. I been driving 15 years now and I stay to this rule. Especially helpful to new driver who are undecisive near road junction. May save yr 12 demerit point and make you a better driver. Do try and feedback. have since reposted it to : http://www.celicasg.org/index.php/topic,559.0.html pretty useful n practical. This was what a driving instructor told me as well. another useful tip is to lift foot off the pedal one car length away from Arrow 1. This allows a more natural braking speed if the lights turn. At/after second arrow, if lights still green, then press pedal to clear the junction.
Lionraymond Neutral Newbie May 15, 2012 Share May 15, 2012 I got it wrong so many times and kena scolding from my wife who hates being jerked that nowdays i normally slow down when i approach a traffic light. Another reason for slowing down is i find at some junctions there may be cars waiting to u-turn or turn and sometimes its a blind spot which gives a better stopping chance if these ppl pull a fast one. In any case, life is short.....too many ppl who dont care abt traffic rules...better to play it safe....you dont lose very much by waiting for one traffic light but you could lose alot if an accident happen..... Yewheng Twincharged January 1, 2015 Share January 1, 2015 Glad that found this thread. The 3 Arrows Theory works for me. Thanks for sharing. I found something quite useful though my years of driving. When approaching traffic light at 80plus to 90plus km/h and when traffic light turn amber, the 3 arrow theory may not work as speed is too fast. Unless you are still abit distance away from 3 arrow. That is why always try best to reduce speed towards traffic light junction to 70km/h or less so that when light turn amber, the driver will be able better to react to the traffic light and the 3 arrow theory will be very useful guide. I hate it when ppl start braking when approaching the traffic lights. Some drivers dunno how to judge or have zero awareness. They become an obstruction. For example a group of cars moved off at green light for 20-30mtrs meaning green light was up not too long ago this joker starts to slow down from 60km/hr by braking when nearing the junction. Kinda annoying. I always have to siam such drivers. What ppl could do to slow down gradually is to let go of the gas pedal and get ready on the brake pedal position when approaching the junction instead of stepping on the brake pedal. Let go early if it's a downward slope. This has to do with personal judgement. Not to mention a lot of ppl are daydreaming when they are driving. Situation awareness zero.
