I took part in the Shell FuelSave Challenge last year. All the participants drove the assigned vehicles fitted with the FC device. All the cars were Civic 1.8L. All had to have the A/C set to 24 deg C. All had 3 persons in the car including driver. All were given the same route to travel on. Urban. Not highway.

Most were able to achieve above 16km/L for the smoother return leg. The best result being 18+. I got a 17.8+. Final day champion managed a impressive 19+.

Your 2L car probably has very high torque therefore making little difference whether with the A/C on or not.

1.8l civic? Is it running on CVT or AT? Very impressive figure if it's for FD civic

Anyone running a business where transport cost is the main issue will appreciate information like these. To keep the business running and yet not pass too much of it to their customer is one way to sustain continuity and maintain customer loyalty. Bottom line is .... low expenditure and resonable profit.

Those with several mouths to feed at home and plenty of errands to run will find this discussion useful too.

As it is, transport cost in Sgp is artificially inflated. One can only reduce it by hypermiling as much as possible.

Fuel price and incidental vehicle expenses is never going to come down. That's the reality. Alternative modes of transport may not fit into our individual needs.

So it's never too late to learn something which may come in handy. After all, it does not cost a single cent to adopt hypermiling into your driving habit. No gadgets involved. No need to buy another vehicle to do it. No need to change your mode of transport. Just use what you have at hand. Just pure human spirit.

Don't wait till the last moment when something happens and have no clue how to deal with it.

Not sure if it is a Continuous Variable Transmission. All I know is that, it is Auto. Every participant drives the same model. Apparently Honda provided the vehicles for the competition. All were installed with the FC monitoring device.

Yes. Indeed i was impressed with the low FC of the new Honda cars. My former very old accord could only do 15+ km/L and it's only a 1.5L. The new ones gives a more complete combustion. Less wastage.

I m convinced that newer high cc cars can outdo small cc cars where FC is concerned. Especially the new VW cars with the 7 speed. Can you imagine cruising between 90 to 100 at slightly less than 2000 rpm? That's very impressive indeed.

Anyone knows if changing to iridium plugs will give better mileage?

I have been using iridium plugs all along with my current car. No way of comparing bcos I have never tried others.

I have wanted to try the Pulse Plug but it is recommended only for Non-Aspirated engines. Mine is turbo charged and it is not recommended at all.

The iridium plugs seem to last without a single problem. Just had mine changed bcos it is near to the end of its lifespan. I would say it's reliable for my engine. No issues at all. Clean burn thru-out. no smokey exhaust whatsoever.

Gears play a big part in saving fuel, every car have a sweet "speed" I'm currently driving a matrix, famous for fuel sucking. Tried traveling on NSHW @100' @110 and @140. 13km/liter, 10km/liter and less than 7km/liter respectively.

I consider myself hyper mile a lot in Singapore, able to get around 11km/liter or worst 10km/liter in all those heavy traffic daily.

Agree with you totally. Folks in US swap gears to achieve excellent fuel economy for their daily needs.

Finding the Sweet Spot is trial and error for each car for each individual's driving patterns and routes and routine.

For information, even a old stick shiftl honda civic can achieve above 20 km/L when one takes advantage of its Sweet Spot.

To those seeking to get more out of your ride, drive safe and considerately. Happy hypermiling!

Why fuel saving tips don't work?

Another point of view is inflation; Petrol prices keep going up, the price adjustments in petrol will definitely cost more than the few hundred millilitres saved.
