Sympathies to the family. Not easy to be a cab driver. Guess they are one of the easiest targets.

Technician Wang Wenfeng went on trial today for the murder of a taxi driver and the subsequent ransom demand from the latter's wife.

The 32-year-old Chinese national allegedly killed Yuen Swee Hong on the morning of April 11, 2009, and then tried to demand a ransom of $15,000 from his wife before the body was discovered.

Police found Mr Yuen's body in a forested area off Sembawang Road on April 17, 2009, and later identified the body to be that of 58-year-old Yuen Swee Hong. Wang was arrested and charged on April 22.

The trial started this morning, reported Shin Min Daily News.

On the morning of the murder, Mr Yuen's wife, Madam Zeng Ailing, called his mobile when he did not return home.

Mr Yuen worked the night shift, driving his taxi from 10pm till 7.30am the following morning. However, when he failed to return home after 9am that day, his wife called him.

A man with a Chinese-national accent answered Mr Yuen's mobile. He told Madam Zeng that he had her husband, who was dying. Then, he demanded a ransom of $15,000 for Mr Yuen's release.

Madam Zeng informed family members and her son made a police report.

During the next two days, Madam Zeng stayed in touch with the accused and he agreed to reduce the ransom to $5,000.

Madam Zeng, however, insisted that she had to see her husband before depositing the ransom money.

According to Shin Min, Wang's defence was that he did not mean to kill anyone.

How police found the body

Besides manpower, police also deployed tracker dogs to aid in the search for Mr Yuen.

They found his taxi in a multi-storey carpark in Sembawang. There were blood stains in the vehicle. They also found Mr Yuen's long-sleeved shirt, which was slashed in five areas, in his taxi. The cuts ranged from 7cm to 30cm long.

After his arrest, the accused led police to the place where the body was abandoned. They also found a bag with two knives, clothes, gloves and nylon rope.

Did some googling and apparently this case happened in 2009.

A 30 year old Chinese national was charged for murder. He was arrested in connection with a body discovered in a forested area off Sembawang Road last Friday.

The highly decomposed body has been identified as 58-year old Yuen Swee Hong, a taxi driver.

If convicted, the suspect could face the death penalty.

I hope the killer gets what he deserves and doesn't get let off due to some crap reason like depression.

perhaps taxi drivers need to have GPS tracking + rear seats CCTV camera to deter potential carjacking/robbery.
