Kar_lover Supercharged March 6, 2011 Share March 6, 2011 With the slew of conti-made 1.6L TC cars coming up, will Cat A COEs start to go up as "borderline" Cat B buyers who intended to buy Camry, Accord, etc migrating to the likes of A1, C5 & 508? I m sure there'll be more coming out and i won't be surprised if VW launches a passat (normal or CC) 1.4 sport. These borderline people have bigger budgets and can bid higher COEs pricing out the lower budget buyers. Jap cars (esp mazda, suzuki and subaru) and other low budget brands (proton, cherry, etc) will really suffer. their jan sales figures was already pathetic (i tink proton was like single digit sales). only toyota and honda will survive. koreans may survive on value but K5 pricing must drop. ↡ Advertisement
Alheych 6th Gear March 6, 2011 Share March 6, 2011 i was wondering that too. skoda had a 1.4T superb. it wouldn't have been feasible years back, but now it's a different paradigm altogether.
Kar_lover Supercharged March 6, 2011 Author Share March 6, 2011 the amount of ground made by VW shows local consumers will be willing to chage if there is sufficient reason. right now the C5 is compelling as will 508 which i will prob prefer design wise but i will likely choose C5 in the end cos i trust C&C more. SimonTan 2nd Gear March 6, 2011 Share March 6, 2011 What TS said sounds logical. I think conti turbo cars will push up Cat.A this year. Japan still N.A engine. Japan cars really lose out on power this year. Good bye Japanese cars.
Minikong 1st Gear March 6, 2011 Share March 6, 2011 (edited) the trend for all conti are tc thier car in all range, and they are using small litre car, and can produce high perofrmance similier to 2-3 litre na cars. for japan wise, they are going into hybrid, and are axing cars thier performance cars like, ctr, evo, rx. seems that japan had already move thier planning to energy saving car for the future, and stop the development of performance oil greezly car. this issue of coe only exist in signapore, and true enough, those cat b car will suffer, due to high coe and lousier performance. just take a look at jetta sports performance, and the saving u can get, cat b cars like civic, camry, is really having a tough fight. as the perofrmance lose to jetta, and the pricing also higher, and the road tax also higher, coe also higher with c5 coming out, think these 4 cyclinder na cars will really suffer. Agree dat COE is unique to singapore but small capacity TC cars have other benefits too, namely, better FC and high torque and in VW's case, DSG as well. Eg, if we take out COE, i would still get Golf/Jetta TSI (not sport) over civic/altis 1.6. And for large sedan such as Camry, the OMV (use OMV as benchmark as no COE) is $25k, Passat CC 1.8T is $32k. Passat CC will wipe the floor with the camry for a few thousand dollars more, i will still go for passat CC. For C5 dynamique, i estimate the OMV to be around $22-23k, it will still be cheaper than Camry and again the C5 will beat the camry in almost all aspects. So seems to me jap is losing out whether in singapore or abroad. Their green car thing had better pay off. But my fren in the oil industry told me new oil fields are still being discovered and with improved drilling technology, more crude can be extracted. hybrid cars likely still need 2 to 3 years before becoming more main stream and their price need to come down. Kar_lover Supercharged March 6, 2011 Author Share March 6, 2011 I believe it will not be too long before obscure brands like geely, chana, hafei, etc pack up and leave singapore (how to keep a business going selling a handful of cars a month?) followed by proton and maybe even chrysler and dodge. IMHO Jetta should not be compared with Civic/Altis. The interior passenger space of a Jetta is as big as a vios and even smaller than the Golf. Passat is a better comparison. Also you got to note that the price difference of a Passat CC 1.8 and Camry 2.4 is over 40k while the actual omv difference is only 7k like you mentioned? VW Singapore is earning close to 30% premium while BM is only earning 10% or so. My 2 cents.

Ladykillerz 4th Gear March 6, 2011 Share March 6, 2011 no matter how big or small is the engine capacity, the COE demand will still be there. now there is a trend saying, cars with SKA plate onwards are those rich ppl. Haha.~
