  1. 1. While stationary waiting for a short while (2-3 mins), do you

    • leaving engine running at idle?
      33
    • off the engine completely?

I've heard different theories - leaving engine running and on idle while stationary leads to problems for the car when it gets older, and frequent on-off of engine is not good idea either. So who is right?

If i know i have to wait more den one min i will off engine.

Cranking an engine requires 6 seconds of idling fuel. U do the math.

and idling is very hard on an engine. its like asking a person to walk on mid air.

but the start stop of engine will cause problems also. infact, my car needs a 2 min cooldown time before turning off the engine.

cranking also sucks battery.

cranking does drain battery, but will be recharged when your vehicle moves. nobody will crank and off again and again in a row right?????

i read that the new BMW M3 auto off itself at stoplight... so maybe it is a good idea to save some fuel. Only thing is that old cars with weak battery better don't try :P

I think if i not wrong,by 2015 all German cars must have the Start Stop feature as standard.

if know for sure will idle more then 2-3 minutes should be off.

if not so sure how long will idle, just wait until 2 min, then off the engine (if still need more time to wait ) :D

For me if waiting for >5mins I will off the engine provided not under direct sun light.

S'pore traffic lights are generally less than that

I haven't seen people stop the engine at traffic junctions here, may be the fact that they don't know when the signal will turn green. But, say in India, most people will switch off their engine if they have to wait in the junction for more than 60 secs and most of the traffic lights have the display counters, so, it is easy to predict and make action. It is also economical to switch off and on, if it is more than 60 secs. I still quite often practise it here in Singapore. I remember, once LTA has surveyed on installing the counters in junctions and later news came that it doesn't really help to save the fuel.

I think to off the engine at a stop junction doesnt make sense at all. Can you imagine the no of times you will need to crank the engine within a day. Its definitely going to strain you car in a sense.

Just take note if you are stopping for more than 3 mins, its better to off the engine. Other than saving fuel, you are also saving the earth, well to a certain extend tat is :D .. But every little step helps

Other than wear and tear due to cranking, I think I read somewhere, not sure if it is true, but it takes quite a bit of fuel to start an engine, which means all/a large part the fuel supposedly saved will be 'paid back' when you start the engine. Of course, won't apply if you really stopping for a long time.
