During my time, there was no sales pitch at all. Those who attain IPPT silver and gold, they send you an application form. You must attain at least IPPT silver or gold for two yrs b4 they send you the application form, I think. Cos 1st time I attain IPPT silver, no such form. 2nd yr I attain the silver again, they send me a form.

There was no slide or presentation at all. [:(]

i think u more laojiao than me. I was enlisted from 97-99.. the talk was conducted when i was in sispec :D

Excuse me, not one to knock you off your horse, you older then me, your time, SOF wasn't formed yet, don't ask me how I know,

I just know. Pioneer selection course also I know, who was in that pioneer batch, how it went, etc.. pager intro was when, SOF only came to light

AFTER something happened, but they were NEVER credited for the action. I will not say further on this, stepping out just to set the record right.

and BTW, they were not even called SOF then.

Pui, want to talk sense, talk sense, how siao no need money, but will kana slap when got people in the know. :D

I disagree... mid-twenties are probably hot blooded, gungho and want to have a piece of fighting. The real winner in a war or any fight is to win without a fight or to go in quietly and leave quietly without too much fanfare...

My experience with our fighting young men? On the plane before landing. The usual bragging. Same you will see in good realistic war movies. Minutes just before the plane lands. Everyone is deafly quiet. SERIOUS! There is so much adrenaline it oozes out into the air.

ah.. so you guys are saying real spec-ops are older and more mature than our NS boys... ok, I can buy that.

However, in Singapore, you gotta make do with what you've got. If there aren't enough regulars to make up a good spec ops team, then no choice gotta rope in the NS boys, even though it's only for about a year or two, before they cycle out to reservist.

you guys can still have da coffee, it would be good to meet up and swap stories anyway!

Even accounts of the US "D-boys" are positive in Somali fighting. All the rangers looked up to the D-boys for their cool and discipline. Then they are also hardly boys as they are usually older men who have been in service for longer and are not virgins to action.

i remember the SOF recruitment talk... their sales pitch was that it's gonna be something adventurous! With that, they showed pics of SOF guys going for mountain climbing expeditions.... joining free falling competitions etc.... machiam like some tour package. There was no military elements at all.

Sounds like any military recruitment ad. Mention the toys and play but never mention the work. [laugh]

Nice joke. I dunno why but how come the SAS gets all the glory and the SBS usually don't get to the press? I mean what is wrong with being called Special Boat Service? Operation Barras is one of their high points recently.

i think.... you can test you mental and physical limits by participating in marathons eg Mongolia Sunrise to Sunset marathon... signing a bond just to test your limits is... is not exactly a good idea... and glad u didnt...movies only portray and glorify the wars heroes, they didnt show what the s--t training it takes to be a hero and sacrifices made and the emotional pains that scars the heroes forever...

Nah, I am not interested in testing myself in marathons, it is so boring that I will prob nod off halfway haha. I like the bond, the adrenaline, the comaradarie and to test myself in a real ops situation, reaction under fire. But I am sure this is something that after you been through a real ops a couple of times you will grow sick of it.

I dont think the type of swimming required by SOF can be learned within weeks. They require personnel to be proficient in the water and remain in good mental state underwater even if u are oxygen deprived.

U must be able to think and remain calm underwater even if ur scuba tank failure. They are not looking for ppl who will panic underwater and then break the surface of water just for one breath of air and compromise the position of all his fellow mates.

There is a pre-requistic for SOF. When I was a regular, they send out selection forms to ppl who attain IPPT silver and gold holders. There is an instruction in the application form of how you should prepare urself during the selection process. The training regime was set 1-2mths before the actual selection course. My batch boy went for it and failed the last few test and kena out of course. He never regret his decision to join the SOF. I never made it pass putting my name on the application form. [laugh] Me not physically or mentally up to such courses.

all the above can be learn also.... u just need aptitude for it..

swimming is swimming... diving is diving... sky diving is sky diving... climbing is climbing

u need to learn how to use your equipment properly and how to react when s--t happens

I suppose SEALS get the limelight and is the exception for those naval special ops. SBS, NDU all deemed probably unfairly as "lesser"

Nope................. the "Laju" case ..... [sly]

Those time already got SOF already?? or whatever the name they have then..

But for the SQ incident, the media reported was the commando unit that save the day, but everybody was saying in actual fact was the SOF, which was believable..
