Kiadaw 6th Gear February 24, 2011 Share February 24, 2011 (edited) When I was learning to drive my instructor made an effort to make sure my left hand do not rest on the manual gear lever while I drive using only my right hand, reason is becos in case of emergency when I need to maneuver out of danger I dun need to waste additional time to bring up my left hand to grab the steering wheel to steer clear of danger. He said although it does not seem to take up much time but it will make a difference in times of danger. That's why I still drive with two hands on the steering wheel always. I dunno what TS is trying to promote here cos I remember clearly to wear proper attire and flat soled shoes when going for driving test. No such thing as taking off footwear or drive one handed, all these are unwanted driving habits to adopt. I think ppl watch too much of that Jay Chou driving one handed in that kid movie Initial D. Same thought. The main reason I use 2 hand is in case one slip (say on bumpy road), I have the security of another. Its not difficult to drive with one hand, so nothing to haolian also. But usually, my left hand is lazy hand, just put on lightly on steering wheel. My grip also increase with speed and at bends. Have anyone seen a racing driver drive with one hand (even on straight)? Why not, as 2 hands give more control & stability. Edited February 24, 2011 by Kiadaw
Ithunk 1st Gear February 24, 2011 Share February 24, 2011 (edited) I old man liao and I don't watch Initial D though heard of it. To me, use one hand on gear stick serves 2 purposes: Always ready to shift gear up and down due to traffic conditions. I'm those that hate to brake for every small little things. using engine brake is more efficient than keep braking to slow down vehicle. Save fuel and offers more control. Although I can use paddle shift but I still find gear stick offers quicker and "hands-on" response. Left hand also close to the hand brake so quicker to react. I have once used the hand brake once during an emergency. These days cars are well built and offers ease of steering control. So one hand is adequate. Just my 2 cents worth. Regards, ya thats what i do also for hand braking...but i seldom use engine braking....and normally use footbrake....get the rpms down then skip gears Edited February 24, 2011 by Ithunk
Zze121 3rd Gear February 24, 2011 Share February 24, 2011 This topic is very old, ppl driving manual like taxi r on 1 hand most of the time, unless straight road at constant speed they use both. Most ppl on 1 hand for auto car, important is eyes must be on the road and hand/leg must be fast to brake. Don't talk over the phone, dont day dream or even quarrel with gf beside u while driving. Accident is becos ppl tailgate, cut queue or not paying attention on the road.
Phluvcat 6th Gear February 24, 2011 Author Share February 24, 2011 I drive with one hand 99% of the time. Even U-turn also one hand. And I can drive with either hand on the steering wheel. So when one hand is tired, the other hand can take over And becos my car is auto, I sometimes drive with my left leg resting on my right knee. It's second nature to me. Sometime I wonder if I can drive using my leg on the steering wheel.....still haven try that yet.... left leg on right knee....either your hand very long and you sit very far back, or your leg very short or your car very big, or your steering wheel very small. [laugh] I am usually quite cramped up in my seat, I sit like a rally driver. I use my leg support against the console or door when I corner.
Thaiyotakamli Supersonic February 24, 2011 Share February 24, 2011 I was "inspired" by a friend who drove like that. He got his license way before me. So some time after passing driving test, has been driving like that and become second nature liao. Is really one handed, not awhile, but 99% of the time from once seated in the car to reach destination and leave the car. I guess a lot here also drive like that right? Please note that this is not haolian thread...just like my "barefoot thread", just wanna see the norm or peculiar way people drive. drive slow one hand, <60km/h 2 hand liao those ppl drive at xpressway with one hand really stupid, imagine ur front tyre burst, u need two hand to control ur car or else
Coder Clutched February 24, 2011 Share February 24, 2011 For continental manual cars I think hard to drive with just one hand right? Unless you dont signal when changing lanes. me! previous car is Renault Clio year 1990. manual gear. this one signal need to use left hand. and suzuki small van (800cc), this one signal not need left hand, one hand all the way . bad habit, but habit already. Regards, ya I also can be considered old, mid life crisis. Been driving like that, way before the Initial D movie came out. People will change driving techniques over time while in my case the catalyst was my friend. I have adapted to a style very much like yours. For me, I can say I do a hell lot of gear shifting until recently I decided that I better cut down, do more coasting instead, and waste the brakes a little more rather than the clutch and gearbox. I still signal diligently, give way where it is safe to do so, make space so that filter lane can clear, etc. If cannot judge the speed and braking point, three hands on steering wheel still will buang. If dun signal, filter recklessly, still cause problems for other motorists. Dunno why some people say driving one handed is not safe, driving barefooted is bad practice. Some may not be able to drive safely with one hand, some have sweaty palms, then dun do it. How about those who use white cotton gloves when driving? Particularly on the braking part. Sometimes really cannot understand why people like to follow so closely in heay traffic condition and tap on the brake every 5 seconds. Feel irritated behind such drivers. Won't know when's the real e-brake.

Melvyn Neutral Newbie February 24, 2011 Share February 24, 2011 Usually drive with one hand at 12 o'clock position for me. Contrary to some posts above, it's not a haolian thing but juz a matter of being used to it till the point where using two hands in the proper 2 and 11 position actually is harder for me. And how I got used to it was that the first car I got was a Proton Wira and the 2 driver vents were kinda spoilt and I used tape to tape it to the position where it's blowing in my face. Dunno whether it was same for all Wiras back then, low setting for aircon was too low and the next level a bit too high so to avoid knuckles feeling cold placed the right hand at 12 to avoid the cold air. Over the course of 2 years became used to it

Please note that this is not haolian thread...just like my "barefoot thread", just wanna see the norm or peculiar way people drive. I believe your friends very lucky. As I steered the car to follow the downhill bend from Lornie Road towards Upper Thomson Road, the offside front tyre burst. There were other vehicles on the left lane, so I had to remain in Lane 1, and to avoid hitting the island divider. Believe me, the steering was real heavy although travelling within the speed limit. Months later, another offside front tyre repeated with another tyre bursting at about the same spot. I never like the idea of driving with only one hand on the steering wheel, although I got the valid Driving Licence to do so.

Over the course of 2 years became used to it for me, started off with my friend, then myself change gear a lot, so ended up this way. In fact my left foot seldom leave the clutch pedal whether pressing it or not, toes will be gently touching the pedal edge. Unless no car, left foot will relax, else even expressway I drive this way, cos with other cars around, expect the unexpected. Right hand is either at 5pm or 3pm, if turning then is 24hr or 48hr loh. Left hand, one gear stick, not for gf lap or other misc stuff. These are habits developed over time, some would say its bad. Clean record so far (touch wood touch wood) and I have not been a nuisance on the road, which is equally important. I bet a lady driver also can have clean record, but every time she is on the road she is a hazard and menace to others. Sorry not to flame lady driver but this is just my personal observations and close shaves. There are of course good female drivers and bad male ones as well. ↡ Advertisement
