Overstaying Malaysian vehicles?

Around my work area (GL), i see many malaysian vans who are clearly here to work. The vans are full of tools, machinery and equipment including ladders, etc. The driver and passenger are clearly workers. They are here everyday and i believe even overnight (cos there are some hostels/quarters near my area so i see them coming back from work and next morning they come out and drive off to work). If they are on work permit, are they allowed to drive Malaysian registered vehicles? I believe that any one with any kind of long term pass (student pass, work pass, etc) cannot drive Malaysian registered cars in singapore. If they are on social pass then they are working illegally.

Nope. See quote taken from LTA

WORK PASSES

Any work pass holder, who is neither a Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR) nor a resident of Singapore, may drive a foreign-registered car and motorcycle in Singapore only if ALL these conditions are met:

a)

he is the registered owner of the vehicle ;

b)

he does not have a permanent residential address in Singapore and returns to his country of origin on a daily basis ;

c)

the vehicle is kept or used outside Singapore for a total period of 6 hours or more everyday ;

d)

he has a valid insurance certificate and road tax for the use of the vehicle on Singapore roads ; and

e)

the vehicle has an Autopass Card to validate its entry/exit at Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints and for payment of Vehicle Entry Permit/Toll charges.

Thanks for the clarification. I believe they fail on (b) as they are here at night (after work) till morning (when they go to work), i.e. not returning on a daily basis.

Thats just an assumption, unless you know for a fact that they don't go back daily. They need an additional permit to get into sg in a goods vehicle too.

Well they need it to show it to get both the goods vehicle permit and the autopass card. So chances are that they do have insurance.

Just realised one thing. If you're talking about the really old vanettes etc, they are passenger vehicles, so they don't need a goods vehicle permit, however there is no way that immigration will not catch them on the way out if they don't spend at least six hrs daily. Btw a lot of those you see at GL are linked to our local SS. They come in on the pretense of legit work in the evenings and head back in the morning. Btw, who in their right mind would want to stay at a workers quarters when home is just a short drive away???

U mean they need to buy sg insurance and sg road tax?? then i believe they don't lor.

MY insurance is valid here, so no, no need to buy sg insurance. and road tax means the car is actually registered to drive on malaysian roads. they don't pay road tax per-se, however they do pay for our road usage whenever they exit as long as they are in sg during office hours.
