Do you skip gears while driving? (for manual transmission)

Don't mind me.. You started so many thread on how to drive a manual.. Why not go trash your car in PG? Best way to learn. The key to manual is to heel-toe. Once you master that, you can drive a manual like an auto. Everytime you brake, blip your accelerator..

downshift skip gear is very common....I can be like in 5th gear, coasting to traffic light, very light on the brakes, slow down till engine wanna shudder...then put to neutral...wahahaha...this is for very gentle deceleration and making sure I am not impeding other motorists.

up gear much less common...1 3 4 5, 1 3 5, 1 2 4 5, 1 2 5...usually like that....under the scenario below:

1) throttle hard up slope reaching crest or sudden change in gradient to gentle or even down hill, no need chiong suah liao, will skip gears

2) feeling angry, pissed, adventurous, wanna lut the car...redline in 1st and/or 2nd gear, sometimes will skip gear, else shift to 3rd gear car very jerky, wanna lurch forward. Very seldom redline in 3rd else seriously over speed limit. But seriously I feel that, dun really need to redline and follow 12345 better.

3) overtaking, lut the car, but if can execute the overtaking very fast, also skip gear

but for above I also usually will stick to 12345 shifting, gentler and less stress to engine, and easier to match the rpm, plus 12345 is the most natural thing to do for me, and its way faster to gain speed than skipping gear due to time lost in gear change.

Twincharged

So far never skip gears. Got used to just shifting through every single gear. Even if need to shift from 5-3 or 5-2 I still will shift from 5-4-3-2 but using heel-toe to rev match so that can downshift smoothly.

I often use the second or third gears to help me merge into traffic from slip roads for the acceleration power, but once I have merged, I would drop into fifth gear, skipping the gears in between.

so you are saying rev till 6k rpm when skipping gears?

Yea that's what I do coz I only need to acceleration not top speed coz need to turn at next traffic light already. ^_^

Can, just match your Rev to the gear you are entering. (Heel Toe technique)

When you are shifting from 4th to 2nd, Step on the accelerator while in clutch and quickly set to gear 2 before the Rev drop from 4000Rpm. protect your gearbox.

i think the main objective of rev matching is to avoid jerks in a car

anyway i would not do it 4000 rpm...although the peak power for the vehicle is 3500 rpm...

i drive at a lower rpm

once i was stationary waiting to make a right turn at a cross junction and I placed my gear to 3rd thinking it was 1st and I moved off miraculously. Except my car was idly and under power, fortunately there wasn't any on-coming vehicle at that time.

yes i believe this is a common issue....but i now know the vehicle well enough to differentiate between the 2 gears....becos first gear and third are very close

Can share with us what car you refer to? I thought modern cars comes with synchronized gears. Just release the clutch pedal gradually will do. Then accelerate if needed to.
