Do you skip gears while driving? (for manual transmission)

hmmm.. i've driven the nissan pickup previously no problem starting off in gear 2 as well [flowerface]:D

Possibly the vehicle's age and condition also plays a part? It didn't help that all the pickups and vans I had to drive so far were extremely old and poorly maintained.

u get used to it ok rite?

No point being lazy - Wouldn't want to just get used to it when starting in gear 1 instead can solve the problem [laugh]

If the vehicle is my own, I wouldn't want to bog the engine and cause harm to my own vehicle in the long run.

If the vehicle isn't my own, I still wouldn't want to bog the engine because it actually consumes more fuel and doesn't give optimal acceleration.

The Hilux was also in horrible condition [laugh]

All the vehicles I mentioned so far were from a rental company and worked well enough, as in no breakdowns or unexpected hiccups. But their mileage was very high, some of them past 200k or 300k, and the exterior condition was horrible.

Well I suppose these vehicles are built to take loads of abuse.

I suppose its the gearing of different vehicles then - after all your own Triton is quite new and yet you find it doesn't start on gear 2 smoothly.

It depends on the gear ratio and the engine power.

On expressway, when i'm accelerating hard to 8k+ rpm, normally, it'll be 1236 or 125 or 1256, depending on traffic.

as above for stick shift transmission

from what i know 5th gear is over drive....so normally its 4th or 3rd when taking on corners....and of course it depends on how much power u want...lol

driving manual as a function is easy....but to totally be an expert in manual is a whole different ball game...expert meaning knowing when is the optimal rpm to upshift downshift etc.

Not truth. Technically the car would not stall in fifth gear if it is an overdrive. Should be easier with tachometer/rev counter on board to help optimise downshifting.

But normally if I have to accelerate fast and when my 3rd gear reaches 6K RPM and I will jump straight to 5th gear. It's smoother and the speed maintain without jerking.

Can share with us what car was that?

There are manual transmission cars with column gear shift. I stopped skipping gear when I started doing hypermiling (my small engine car barely accelerate well enough). I believe there can be more clutch wear with skipping gears (upshift/downshift) if not performed smoothly. Many/most vehicles should have no problem moving off with 2nd gear on level road without passengers/cargo. Only for hypermiling, I utilise all gears for upshifting/downshifting with my 1.3L car, even without passengers (no issue if already rolling downhill to use 2nd gear).
