Vhtfhwlego Supercharged February 17, 2011 Share February 17, 2011 1921 Audi introduces left-hand drive Right-hand drive originated from the age of the horse and carriage, when the coachman sat on the right-hand side. In September 1921 Audi became the first German car manufacturer to present a production car with left-hand drive, the Audi Type K. By giving the driver a better view of oncoming traffic, consequently making overtaking manoeuvres in particular safer, left-hand drive became established by the end of the 1920s. Source: http://www.conceptcarz.com/view/makehistor...di_History.aspx Having driven cars in both L&R, Left hand drive cars has better control in the manual gear box hence better car handling. Mclaren F1 is centre driving position and gear stick is on the right.

Altivo 3rd Gear February 17, 2011 Share February 17, 2011 In Singapore, we are Right Hand Drive/Left Hand Traffic. Generally, folklore has it that the knights/horsemen in Britain generally hold their lance/swords with their right hand. Hence they would be on the riding on the left side of the road so that they can fight the enemies that are coming towards them on their right. Guess the tradition stayed on and was adapted as motorway rule. It's said the Napolean first changed to LHD/RHT after he conquered Europe. If you notice, most commonwealth countries which were formerly part of the UK empire are just like us, RHD/LHT. There are some execeptions such as Canada which changed to LHD/RHT for convenience and comformity since US is LHD/RHT. Taiwan used to be RHD when they were under Japanese rule later changed to LHD when they became closely aligned with US due to tensions with China. Okinawa used to be LHD under US occuption and they changed it to RHD after US handed the island back to Japanese rule

Viceroymenthol 6th Gear February 17, 2011 Share February 17, 2011 (edited) US always like to be different. many countries using keep left, they keep right. people using km, they use miles. people using kg, they use pounds But the map shows many more countries driving on the right side of the road (LHD) than on the left. In fact, almost all of Europe drive on the right except little britain. So what do you mean by "many countries"?
