isnt DSG the one with some serious issues?

my fren's 1 yr old Golf DSG gearbox suddenly went jerky while traveling on TPE. It's jerky like how you jump start a manual car.

got tow back and got a new gearbox from volks. SE told him they have stocked up near gearbox, expecting such problems this year.

last year may take one month to replace. now 2 days.

CVT is cool.. but need to take care more than AT.

1yr old car?Is your friend car mileage very high? The gearbox lifespan so short? [confused]

I will choose the 4AT of the 3 although it's dated but as you said proven technology and so is the fuel efficiency. The rest is depending on the driver's right foot. Even though the first 2 boxes may have better fuel efficiency the margin is not very far apart.

The first 2 boxes you will have to go back to AD to service for the peace of mind, as for the 4AT you can do it anywhere. If you are talking about cars of 1.6L NA and below cars here I think you can forget about response. In terms of savings on fuel, the first 2 boxes will be offset by their maintainence & servicing cost, on the long run the 4AT will most likely give you a more problem free and better savings of the 3. That is if you are planning to keep your car for at least 5 years.

Erm...you offer quite a different point of view when most here would want updated technology and feeling being short-changed for a 4AT.

Take for example, the Fabia TSI 7 Speed DSG (A) where the price closely matches with C3 4AT. Even a Polo is not far away with those price bracket. Peugot probably overpriced itself with 4 AT in the similar segment. One would probably felt that 7 speed is a better buy. New tech, potential good fuel savings and etc.

If given a choice, which 4AT in this segment would you recommend?

Thank you very much.

If have to choose among these cars I will choose the C3.

My concern is on the tiny boot space. The suspension is good [thumbsup]. A 1.6L co-developed with BMW and used in the Mini. I wonder why European like Hatch so much, wonder what is the rationale?

If you been to paris and most of the major cities in europe, it's not hard to imagine why they prefer smaller cars/hatches.

The old roads are really narrow and a small car/hatch make sense esp in busy cities.

Frankly, I have never travelled to Europe except the States, M.E. and other contitents.

I thought Ang Mos are of bigger build and they'd naturally prefer a larger car. Yet, they build nice small cars.

the gearbox was one of the deciding factors for me when deciding between the Allion (CVT) & Sylphy (4AT). Having driven the CS3 Lancer (CVT) for 4 yrs i have gotten used to the smooth acceleration of the cvt transmission. other than the seamless shifts i feel the cvt also helps in improving FC, of course if driven correctly.

Just curious. How do you drive the CVT correctly to improve Fuel economy? I thought this is the gearbox that you just shift to D and forget the rest?

Thanks.
