Skunk Clutched January 22, 2011 Share January 22, 2011 It's not about the instrument, nor even about the kid's interest, as long as he/she doesn't absolutely hate it. When my children grow up (they're still very young), i will make them learn music, even if they don't expressively express interest in it. Studies have shown that children that learn musical instruments from a young age, have better brain development and eye-hand coordination. Supposedly, the complexity of playing musical instruments stimulate brain cells that would otherwise be not stimulated from other activities. there's a French proverb: "Music, Sports and Art are what builds a strong nation". Nevermind about the nation part, strong kids are what it gives lol
Sosaria Twincharged January 22, 2011 Share January 22, 2011 Violin and piano. Violin first. Then kid found piano (existing instrument at home) much easier to play and learn, and appreciated it for that! But since violin already started and progressed, so continue with it. Two instruments are not really too much, IMHO. Many people in musical career, even rock stars , can play more than one instrument. I think the musical training is good for self-discipline, patience and perseverance. Qualities sorely needed in schools and workplaces today. But besides music, can also be other activities that have slow, measured progress, e.g. martial arts, dance, etc. Also music (art as well, actually) exercises the right-brain, which is good for development, as they mostly only exercise the left-brain (science, maths, logic, etc.) in school. Solar Turbocharged January 23, 2011 Share January 23, 2011 Hahaha... I am not alone. I am also sending my son to JMC. Attending the class with him and learn with him. Book1 and 2, I still can follow. Later for Book 3 and 4 which requires 2 hands, I cannot catch up. But the boy can. And yes, I am also facing problem with my boy, refusing to practice. we really have to sit next to him if want him to practice. To Kelpie, no need to waste money with the piano for the start. I am using the keyboard from Casio for $399 only. It works well at least for the first 2 years. If he is learning well, then may consider getting a piano later. My son just started JXC and parents can soon no need to attend with the children. What a relief! do note that the yahama one don't teach the 'official' notes (whatever they call it) required for grading (if you want to in future).the doh reh me far soh, instead of A B C D E.. ↡ Advertisement
