[laugh] [laugh] my son did that too.... just sign him up one at a time see if he is interested... but their hand is too small for guitar if too early.

parents know nothing about piano is ok as long as you can 'listen' and know where gone wrong, when my girl first started, she doesn't understand the 'meaning' of the piece (most kids won't understand lah), so we went to internet and let her listen to how it should be played....

May I know how much is a Piano in the market? Afraid to spend the money and later the piano becomes like a white elephant at home and collect dust.

Regards,

If the parents know nuts about piano, I wonder how do we accompany them and to get them to play the right tune?

Piano is big in size so I'm of the thought for him to learn something that is "portable".

My son came to me one day and asked me whether he can learn a muscial instrument. I asked him, which one do you like? He can't answer me. So I asked him, do you like Piano? He said, "ok". Then I asked, do you like violin, "also can". How about Guitar? "can try also" [laugh].

So ended up no conclusion.

I am not musically train and I do not play any instrument. I sent my kids to Yamaha for 2 years to establish the foundation (i think it is call the JMC). In these 2 years, not only the kids are learning, the parents are also learning. Though I am not learning it practically, at least I can read the dynamics, tempo and the bean spouts (musical notes) (though much slower than my kids). In JMC, the parents are require to sit in with the kids during lesson. Some maids sit in instead of their parents. :-( After JMC, I pull them out of Yamaha and send them to music school for one-to-one coaching. All in all, I spent 4 years at Plaza Sing every Sat. Phew........that was then........Now I have just signed up for guitar course myself. haha

I suggest you start off with a 2nd hand entry level piano. Cost around 1 to 2k. Brand plays a part. Getting a Yamaha brand allows you to sell off easily in future. That's what i did.

OIC, Thank you for the information.

By the way, is the teaching for electronic Piano and classical piano the same. I see that the electronic piano is smaller in size [cool].

expose your kid to music

i say piano is good to start with

the left hand right hand coordination

works the right brain left brain

(i think this is one good benefit)

when he/she's older,

he will definately find a 2nd instrument to learn

I agree. Get a relatively "new" used one. They would have been serviced under the first owner. Many parents sell their white elephants after their kids give up within 1 or 2 years.

Hahaha... I am not alone. I am also sending my son to JMC. Attending the class with him and learn with him. Book1 and 2, I still can follow. Later for Book 3 and 4 which requires 2 hands, I cannot catch up. But the boy can.

And yes, I am also facing problem with my boy, refusing to practice. we really have to sit next to him if want him to practice.

To Kelpie, no need to waste money with the piano for the start. I am using the keyboard from Casio for $399 only. It works well at least for the first 2 years. If he is learning well, then may consider getting a piano later.

My son just started JXC and parents can soon no need to attend with the children. What a relief!

(edited)

i played the ErHu (chinese orchestra from 6-14 years old... quite fun actually. Why not consider chinese ochestra?

I played GuZheng too. I still have it at home. The instrument is probably about 30 years old by now. The children didn't like it, too bad  .
