Most got their licenses at age 18-20 when our parents asked us to learn..

 

Unless you are ah sia kia, parents gv u money to buy car then, by the time u can afford a car is at age 26 or later for guys becos of NS, so 8-10 years of non-driving will make you forget there's an indicator switch, blindspots, inconsiderate lane changing..

problem is small ego la

everybody want to hog 1st lane, nobody want to allow others to over-take, even if you can overtake me i'll tailgate you

 

go malaysia and see how they drive, signal only they slow down let you overtake

once you overtake they give buffer space

even if you c--k up and mistake the exits, they'll allow you to switch from 3rd to 1st lane, no problem everybody slow down for you

mistake nvr check blindspot and get horned at? say sorry ppl will smile back at you... do it in singapore and maybe pierre png will stop you on lane 1 of the expressway to tell you he's a celeb while you are a peon so you must give way to him

there will be people whose driving skill is not as good as yours, and others who are much better, for different reasons. so dont look down on those who cannot drive as well as you, unless you are the best.

forgot to add, becos many singaporeans got no $$ cannot afford true sports cars like evo or wrx end up buying cars like swift, fit, jazz and go onto expressways thinking they own some sports car

Nah, I don't think there are 8-10 years of non-driving.

If you want to learn driving, you would know that you could at least have the opportunity to drive the family car.

Of course, the rich kids get their own car also.

 

For me, I got mine in the first year of NS. I got to drive the family car once in a while, mostly on weekends.

Was about 5-6 years before I got my own car. Ultimately, it has not affected my driving skills.

I still reckon I am an excellent driver

 

I believe it's more due to the inherent nature of many Singaporeans - impatience, wanting to be first, kiasuism.

Gotta learn to be more patient. I think driving a hybrid has trained me to be more patient too.

Its the expensive cars are make the driver's ego big....which lead to such careless driving style.

 

Its the same everywhere....if you see overseas....people who drives expensive cars also has weird driving style! Inflated ego at work!

 

Just that Singapore cars are expensive...so all of us have these ego issues!

 

If you see kids....those with Iphone4 also got inflated ego compared to kids holding basic phones.

If you see work place....those supervisors//engineers also got inflated ego compared to colleagues holding lower posts.

If you see rich relatives during CNY.....the richer ones will talk the loudest...the poorer ones will tiam-tiam nodding the head in agreement.

I think the biggest culprit are the ah neh lorry drivers.... farking morons. THey bring their India driving culture to Singapore.

 

I also cannot comprehend why are they given the license so easily? Can someone tell me how fast these arse holes can convert their third world country license in Singapore?

Your analysis is wrong.

 

You are just unlucky your family do not have a car to let you drive or your friend don't dare to let you drive their rides, so you have to save up your own to buy one. What age you pick up driving has nothing to do with the driving standard in Singapore.

 

The contributing factor of poor driving habits are:

- The road of Singapore are too short and congested to gain useful experience

- Most trip in Singapore are short, the most is 1 hour to destination unless jam.

- Most roads in Singapore are quite well design and well maintain, traffic is generally the same for all road. It's easy to drive so most Drivers take it for granted become complacent. So when they hit situations they don't meet often they will gabra and resulting to loss of control in their vehicles and accidents.

- Singapore is generally a smooth environment with no extreme seasonal weather, hence the reason above.

- Singapore driving syllabus empthasis on putting ideal theory to practical use instead of applying real-life situations to lesson. Hence many pass driving without the real knowledge of how to park a car as they learn with poles(It's good to hear now they learn without poles though). One impt factor they did not teach is how you "feel" your car and understand the size. Once you can "feel" your car, parking can close 1 eye. Driving school lacks the teaching of basic defensive driving tactics except for e-braking.

- Singapore, being a small city, doesn't really treat driving as a nessassity. So many ppl have license but lack the experience or does not own a car. Once they hit the road they may indirectly cause inconvenience or danger to other users.

- The influx of foreign workers in Singapore brought in driving cultures from their country that local to not understand and comprehend. From the non-traffic lights style of India, to the kampong motorbike style of Malaysia and the left-hand driving of China. These worker needed thing to get use to Singapore's traffic style but at the same time cause distress to local users. Just as the Aussies sweared at asians for horrible driving.

AS long as they have the equivalent license from their country[ies], all they have to do is to pass our theory test here and they'll have converted their license.

-get a GPS

 

-plan ur journey using online websites

 

-and keep to the left-most lane

 

One shouldn't jeopardise everyone else for own sake, that's selfish! Travelling on the 1st lane while thinking of the route is inconsiderate and danger to others! :angry:

yep....PATIENCE is the key word...

 

God is fair and gives everybody the same 24hrs...its how you use it.

 

Those that always high beam and horn incessantly shows their impatience.

 

Just like what I encounter yesterday evening at People's Park, in front left turn pedestrians crossing, this bugger behind me kept horning and flash light coz he wana go straight, where there are 3 more lanes to his right.

I share your view.

I find the driving in Singapore is enjoyable.

The only pet peeve I have is against Taxi drivers.

Else everyother drivers are good and do not annoy me much at all.

 

I do not bring comparision of Malaysia driving style or Aussie driving style.

Singapore is Singapore....the driving style is Singapore style! Accept it, conform to it and drive and enjoy!

Accidents happens in Malaysia and Aussie too....does not mean other countries driving style is less stressful or better.
