Hi guys, posting tis on behalf of a friend. He's currently driving a '05 Matrix1.6M..and yesterday the ECU failed on him (or at least tat's what the current workshop is telling him). If ECU fails, car cant totally cranked right?

Now, he needs to know if you guys can help & share which workshop specialises for Matrix..and to see if indeed it's the ECU tat had died or possibly just some faulty wirings/harness. He's willing to tow it over, since the current workshop doesnt seem to knw much and yet wants to charge $1.5k-$1.7k! Really appreciate all ur kind opinions and feedbacks, and help.. Thanks guys! [thumbsup]

Can crank, but cannot start,E.C.U. seldom fails, except you did something silly to the electrcal system.

The car's 101% stock. Owner's not the sort who will meddle with all those stuff...and it still died on him. Poor chap..

What he said was, cannot crank but there's still power supply for the radio and lights.. I just find it weird. It could well be something else and not ECU, u think?? [:/]

starter motor kaput sibo? Use screwdriver to short the contacts, if can start means starter motor gone liao. (Be prepared for some sparks flying around when going this).

cannot crank but still power for the radio and lights - did he try jump starting? Sounds like a battery failure.

If can crank and cannot start - maybe it's one of the electrical (ignition coil) or fuel intake.

I've told him tat the first time....but apparently the mechanics told him its the ECU, since the starter motor is "okay". That's why I tot of getting a second opinion.. and possibly tow-out the car. Coz I knw ECU wont kaput so easily.. <_<

At the beginning, he cant start...so he did a jump-start. Car running ok. 15mins into driving, the car just died in the middle of the road, and he taught it was the alternator. Checked alternator and it was charging fine... the car cant crank after tat, but when put to 'ACC' ...there's power supply. Does this mean Matrix's current suppply runs independent from the ECU...?? coz, some models are dependent...so ECU die..all supply will also die..

u can try google it. its located at kaki bukit autobay level 2.not sure of the phone and exact unit. but its the first unit on your left at level 2.i send both my korean rides there and they seem good.

but do call them before coming to see if they are open.coz their workshop caught fire in early dec  .so its basically "black" and easy to spot, provided they haven't done anything to it yet. [:/] basically they would do work at the workshop opposite them(borrow some equipments, but their mechanic doing it), well that was what they did when i send mine 3weeks ago. [blush]

i think ur friend in a difficult situation because the car now need towing in order to move from WS to WS.

frankly.. if u talk to any WS.. they will ask u to move the car there so they can take a look... so if WS unable to dignose or quote u price u r not comfortable... u may need to re-tow to another WS.

Ur friend had any regular WS servicing for him? if 1.5K~1.7K was quote by his regular WS.. it could be an honest quote (unless ur friend hop ard for servicing). last time had a friend who had ECU problem.. was quote like 800 for a recon ECU board...

frankly.. u can try to borrow a ECU dignosie machine (i dont know what u call that) to plug in.. if really is ECU failure... it shld be able to show something..

It could be just a bad battery.

A bad battery can drag down the alternator and possibly damage it...and then the engine stalled in the middle of the road.

ECU is very difficult to die.

Other things that may not worked properly are sensors which died.

Get more opinions.

my ex-colleague car has the same symptom , got power but cannot start .After testing every vital and non vital 'organ' , it turn out to be the fuel pump .

He told me he always run another 20~30km++ after the low fuel indicator came out then he refuel .

After fuel pump change(<300) , everything back to normal .

Well, guys...thanks a bundle for all the great feeedback, which ALL came in handy for my friend...and me, as well. We've learnt alot of new things, albeit we drive diff cars. The owner got the workshop to try every options u guys hv stated here...and it still down to the ECU. Apparently, one of the chip got burnt (dunno how that happened tho'..). Got it replaced with a used ECU..all-in he was quoted $650. After a few minutes of ding-dongs, it was down t0 $550 + 6mths warranty! haha... guess he saved quite a fair bit, not bad! Well done brothers..! [grouphug]
