Hi,

I'll be going to HCMC, Vietnam around the CNY period, and this will be my first time there as well, so thought of asking for advice from people here that have been there.

Any recommendation for hotels there?

Plus, what's there in HCM worth visiting?

thanks

Geez not a good time to go, everything also closed just like SG and MY.

They celebrate CNY for a whole week.

As for hotel, New world hotel or sedona residences, or at least something in district 1.

I'm actually going on the 13th Feb, hopefully by then it's quite ok already.

Was going through some websites on hotels in HCM, and it seems the hotels are all in USD, and not really cheap. Maybe it's the vietnam tourism website, so the recommendations are all the higher end ones.

if you dont need stars, any of the backpacker hotels along bui vien/ pham ngu lao Q.1 would suffice. otherwise, i'd recommend windsor (4stars) at Q.5

for tours, its the same things always, cu chi tunnels, independence museum, mekong delta, cho ben thanh, etc.

stay in Q.1 if language is a barrier.

fyi, contrary to popular belief, you dont need USD at all. VND is accepted everywhere.

TS, act i hv stayed before duxton, riverview renaissance, bong sen during my biz trips. if i rem correctly bong sen is usd65 per nite, its decent enuff. as long as within district 1, the hotels are fairly within walking distance of each other. since there are no trains to talk abt, so anywhere is fine. taking taxis are fine but avoid those freelance tour bikers.

Looking at the hotel rates from the net so far, I guess it'll have to be around 100USD

If you're not particular about room size and amenities, you can try Saigon Mini 5 hotel located in the backpacker's alley in Q1.

http://www.asiarooms.com/en/vietnam/ho_chi...ni_hotel_5.html

The bed is clean, comfortable and price cheap. Staff speaks pretty good English and security personnel friendly and helpful. My first time there I got problem with the cab driver who thinks I'm a foreigner and try to "carrot" me. The guard came out and assisted me. There's also free WIFI and breakfast and 2 PCs are available at the lobby. Room service I think is available 'cos the dining room is on the top floor. Try not to take the highest floor which is also the cheapest room iirc 'cos in the morning @0500 hrs those walking up the stairs and can be heard loudly. The lift only stop at the highest for with room so you have to walk a flight of stairs to the dinning area.

Convenience store and eateries all nearby.

If you need bigger room just book early.

Sorry I can't recommend you any interesting places to visit 'cos I myself have not visited any. [:p]

Where did you had your pho?

There's one at Q5 named 'Pho Ley' and it tasted very nice. Every time the place is packed with people but sure can find seats.

I heard that they have another outlet at Q3.

Though quote in USD, you can still pay in VND. Last week the rate is about S$1 - VND$16100 at those goldsmith shops. At the airport, I saw S$1 - VND$16257... :o

Even taxis sometimes ask for USD 'cos they know VND not stable.... [laugh]

Watch out for the cab drivers who approach you directly at the aiport, they are merely trying to fleece you. Go directly to the taxi cue, and insist on using the meter. When it comes to cabs VN is better than MY [:p]

There are $20 hotels along Le Thanh Ton in district 1 not far away from the reunification palace, the former presidential palace. Just avoid the upper floors as they are fire traps.

Nothing much ...for cheap things go to Ban Than market...traffics are heavy..especially motorbikes.

Be very care when you cross the road.
