high GST is the way to go. It's the right thing to do.

but basic items should be exempted from GST hikes to give ordinary ppl a chance to survive.... by all means tax luxury consumptions as much as they like, but spare the poor men a thought.....

grateful = allow them draw world highest ministers' salary, but with such fat salaries are they delivering world best performance as gahmen?.... making sgp the best country in all aspects?.....

i know you are discontented with life, and blame the gahment's policies for not benefitting and making it easy you and others alike. but, please be more realistic and grounded. everything in life is a trade off. you want the gahment to provide a good life, someone some where else has to pay a price. put it this way, everyone has their needs and wants, but you have to pay a price to earn it yourself. the gahment's job is to create a environnment and opportunities for you to earn it through education and an open economy and a meritrocacy system. i am not wanting to put you down, but just want you to see the big picture, and hence have more contentment in life.

i read a famous and wise saying, "to be happy in life, you have to be practical, grounded and stay optimistic". dude, i wish you find happiness in new year.

Actually there is nothing wrong with what he said. But there is something wrong with the ppl who put him in the position to be able to say this without serving ns.

i will appreciate him more if he had served ns and said that, just like our fellow countrymen.

Just look around us. We are the richest nation (per capital) by a landslide compare to the countries around us (except oil rich Brunei). Of course, its natural, people from the region wanted to come here to earn big bucks. Some more, Government welcome them with open arms with virtually no strings attached.

Ermmm . . open legs? wide wide . . . [laugh]

the country needs foreigners for the reason of creating a bigger economic pie. because given our country's small population, we do not have the critical mass to create a big enough economy to self sustain local production, and to compete with other countries for businesses. pls understand this rationale behind the foreign workers\talent policy. thank you.

Yeah! But our infrastructure doesn't seems to be able to support such a rapid increase in foreigners. Many of us are somehow affected in one way or another from competing directly with them for jobs to housing etc. The feeling of sharing our economic success with the FTs just doesn't go down well with most native Singaporean here.

please, my question is simple: if ministers are paid highest salary in the world, they jolly well deliver best performance and make sgp the best place... unfortunately this is not happening.... what accountability the ministers have?

lets not side track and wrongly assume others are not contented with life... fyi (since you like to assume without basis what others are feeling) through hardwork and not so much help from the gahmen I have given my family a relatively comfortable life, i am contended with what I have but not at all impressed with the performance of the over-paid gahmen.... hope you have an open mind and not put words into others mouth... Happy New Year to you [:)]

I work in the public service as well... i have an email address that ends with "gov.sg" I am given very specific kpis and targets which i have to meet every year and these are review in the mid year... and I'm just a dispensable engineer... i guess these million dollar salary geniuses should have very detailed kpis as well...

why not make the ministers show us their KPI set at the begining of their term and let the ppl rate them considering they are paid world's highest pays?? :D:D

the civil service who supports these highly paid ministers is no doubt working hard, but some ministers who lead the service dont seem to be doing a good job to justify their pays......... i have friends in the civil service (mainly only up to mid-management level) and I see them working hard taking their bosses/ministers' instructions.... unfortunately not all instructions are sound and serve the ordinary men well.

i think everyone knows that. that is not the problem.

let fts in but don't take advantage of sporeans e.g. making sporean serve ns for 2yrs and loose the competitive edge against fts

cant they find a solution to get fts in and at the same time allow sporeans to have a fair fight.... is that too difficult for our multi million dollar leaders to solve or are they just acting dumb as they know that there is no one who can qtn them?

Maybe the best paid CEOs also couldn't deliver the best performance. Life is never fair one lah. [laugh]

Some are chosen because they can deliver good speeches. Articulate their way through.

Seems like our local girls are hot...most of my FT colleagues in my office are not pursuing FTs of the opposite sex but are rigorously pursuing our own local girls... they even tell me their 'success stories'...cb

many people lament about the millions of dollars our top ministers make each year, and therefore when there are areas which are not ideal, tey say the ministers are not worth their salt. but you need to understand that, in the private sector, a CEO of a big organization commands such high salaries, some much higher. my uncle relative who is a ceo of a local conglormerate (named after a soft drink name), earns several million each year. now, his company probably makes a few hundred of millions each year, or a billion of two, providing jobs for thousands of workers. compare to a countries leaders, they formulate policies for the well being of millions of people, and manage hundreds of billions of dollars, create and manage an economy worth trillions of dollars, and implement these policies, is a few million not in proportion to the mamoth responsibilities ? and for their past achievements in creating a first world developed economy from nothing (no natural resources, scarse land and manpower), developed a economy which provides long term jobs , infrastrucutre that attracts foreign investment, education system , transport system and housing landscape, dont tell me the reward commensurate ? if truly capable people with the highest calibre are not being paid competitively with the private sector, they will not join the public sector, bearing in mind they also have family to feed and personal aspirations like everybody else.

then we will be left with those half past six type of candidate who will gladly take up the posts of public servants earning a fraction of what the private sector will pay for the truly qualified, and what you get is a group of much lesser competent ministers. do you think we would have gone this far as we had today ? and dont tell me what nonsense of public servants should serve with a heart and not high salary, and therefore should accept much lesser than what they can command elsewhere. nobody including you and i will.

no doubt there are many areas that can be improved, lets give credit where credit is due, and when we criticise the gahment for far from being perfect, to understand the constraints, long term benefit against the short term , the bigg picture against the small sacrifices, to see the positive behind the negative, then we will be more grateful and contented.

ever wonder why the world is envious of us, while we are always indulge in self pity and degradation of our gahment ? read all the complaints against our gahment in the mcf threads, i say, most of them are either narrow minded, shortsighted, or downright unreasonable. and if you choose to see the white as not white enough , you will never have any gratitude and contentment.
