Hi anyone can recommend a good watch repairman? My old watch died on me and the guy who troubleshoot it said it was due to the battery fluid leaking into the watch body, as a result of which the hands are not moving. [:(]

Appreciate any horologists good advice here on a good repairman. The whole watch still looks good except for this problem. Thanks

Regards

Turbocharged

I got a watch as a present. It says "Automatic" on the face but was told that the sales person said I can actually wind it up. Is there such a thing as both manual winding and automatic? I thought it's either manual winding, auto or quartz (battery powered)? sorry ah, I am a noob in watch so asking these kind of noob questions.

My other automatic watch is just an automatic watch. No winding required (also not possible as it has a screw down crown). The new watch does not have a screw down crown.

LOL. WTF is a "mechanical watch"?? There's only automatic watch or quartz watch.

TS in your case I believe it's a quartz watch. Quartz watches have this electronic circuit board that runs the watch, any event of a battery leak the acid will most likely destroy the circuit board. Sad to say it's as good as gone, get a new one. Spend some money on an automatic watch which doesn't require any battery change.

automatics are a subset of mechanical watches. the other subset is manual winding.

if its of interest to you, you can google more about watches before shooting off here.

My friend, there is such a thing as a mechanical watch. Mechanical watches require self winding to power the watch.

Quartz watches are normally battery/solar powered so i guess its pretty self explanatory.

The difference between mechanical and automatic is the fact the mechanical watches need to be self-wound but automatics can help to wind the watches by harnessing the kinetic energy produced by movements of your hand.

Don't be so quick to laugh at others just because of your ignorance.

Fyi, the mechanical watches are some of the most expensive watches in the world (Especially those older ones that are out of production).

Come on lah. How often do you see ppl use those antique watch? For collection maybe. The more usable day to day ones nowadays are automatic and quartz watches.

My, my. Your maturity level is seriously shocking [:|]

Not trying to put you down but some mechanical watches cost more than the house you and i are living in.

Learn to respect the craftsmanship and effort to make these watches.

Enjoy your last few days of the school holidays though. [laugh]

So what makes you the maturity judge here?

I'm talking about day to day use watches and all you know is brag about what you know about such mechanical watch. Show off. [rolleyes]

I do know of a few people who wears an antique watch for daily use. And their age ranges from late twenties to fifties.

A mechanical watch is not so much to tell the time. It is one of the finer things in life. It is no way more accurate than a quartz, but the beauty and finesse is something probably that a quartz watch cannot match. And some say, the man-hours behind making one.

While I am no watch expert, I do have a small and not-so-expensive collection of skeleton watches. I can spend quite a long time wiping them and admiring the movements. This itself takes my mind off stress a bit. To view all those parts moving in an orchestrated motion is something pretty fascinating for me.

Some buy watches for practical purposes, some for aesthetics, and others for investments. Same as cars.

Hi there

you probably need to overhaul the entire movement.

pardon my lack of knowledge but it says "automatic" on the face and it needs a battery? May I know what make/model?

edit: just read it; Guess watch. Most likely it's just quartz (although I am guessing citizen or whatever may have some quartz+automatic hybrids -- not too familiar with citizens though). Gotta buy a new one or overhaul.
