I always hear and read that standard of living cost now is higher and can't afford to have kids blah blah blah.

Well, if you were to look at it, our salary now is defintely much higher than last time.

If last time parents or even grandparents can afford to have 3 to 12 kids, why are we complaining even we have only one?

What is your take?

This is an opened discussion, all ideas and comments are welcome. [rolleyes]

Having read some of the postings, I think it may be best to compare the median wage for the last 2 - 3 decades against the cost and standard of living - then and now. At least it will be a more relevant comparison and provide some clues to why mindsets of Singaporeans and gahment may / may not have changed.

Also, compare the no. of FW then and now. Even many so called 'expatriates' (probably now termed as FTs) are now subject to local job t & c unlike the past when it was 'expensive' to lure them. All these will have a bearing on why Singaporeans may be compelled to accept the 'lesser' life now than they could have.

IMO, the more fortunate ones would be those in their 50s and above who benefited the good times of the past i.e. great spending power, less mercenary and more caring gahment (before '90s), less competition from foreigners and cheap housing which are even affordable to many lower income group let alone the middle income.

Since this is a car forum, I would propose that many of today's car owners may not have as much spending power as those car owners of the 70s to 90s.

Just my perception.
