President is a highly respected figure and represents the state at functions.

I respect him for the work he has done for Singapore!

What exactly has he fought for sgp citizens??.... cutting ribbons and kissing babies not counted hor..... :D:D

other countries' president work harder than their prime minister or the whole cabinet or just as hard.

ours is more of an icon, nothing more in my opinion. this kind, salary still so high.

i read before somewhere, President Obama's monthly salary is equivalent to SGD 8k+ per month only? i might be wrong but i know the figure is not as high as ours.

I don't know if anyone here (except the old fogies like me) remember the original purpose of the Elected President. One of the key functions was to keep tabs on the National Reserves. The last President to do a proper job on this was the late Mr Ong TC. He had a *very* hard time doing his job, and was given nothing but interference.

The current incumbent SR Nathan is doing nicely, not rocking the boat too much. Just the way "they" like it. But is it serving the interests of the People?

I guess the powers-that-truly-be wanted nothing but lip service to a written set of ideals, but no real "People's Action". [rolleyes]

Well said!

We dont need to pay such high salary to have a ceremonial figure head ........... overpaid, under-perform in terms of real contributions.... welcome to SGP!

I respect the late OngTC for trying to do something useful as our president, unfortunately the truth he tried to unearth offended someones.....

if you dun like paying the salary for the president of singapore, put yourself in the shoes of our malaysians neighbours across the causeway, they have to pay for the upkeep of not 1, but 10 sultans.
