SINGAPORE: Police have arrested a serial snatch thief following a crucial lead provided by an iPhone application.

The thief had snatched a 36-year-old woman's iPhone in the early hours of Sunday morning along Lim Liak Street, in the Tiong Bahru area.

Police was able to trace the stolen phone via an iPhone application called "Find My iPhone". The application allowed the missing iPhone to be located on a map.

With this important lead, officers were able to establish the identity of the suspect and he was arrested on Monday in Outram Road.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is also believed to be responsible for several other snatch theft cases in the Tiong Bahru and Kim Tian estates.

Police said the suspect, an 18-year-old Malaysian man, will be charged in court on Wednesday.

If convicted he could be jailed for up to 7 years and caned.

Police said a Court Order will be sought to remand him for further investigations.

Thought if the police really want to trace a phone they can actually do so by tracking which zone/area your phone is sending/receivig signal?

When I was in US, there was a couple with a baby got stuck in a snowstorm after taking a wrong turn. The husband left the vehicle to search for help and the wife stayed in the car with the baby. They were also unable to use their phone due to the blizzard causing poor phone signals.

When almost the whole state e-services mobilised including hundreds of volunteers, the vehicle was found by the phone signal emitting in their car and the wife and baby was saved. The husband was found dead several km away in the snow.

So, I always believed An Gong always have the means to track us if they really want to..... [lipsrsealed]

the zone is ultra big area

That I think many thought so but in reality, I don't think so.

After the US rescue incident, I believed the zone is not as big as we thought. So next time if wanted to do something fishy, better to off the phone totally.... [laugh]

I am most surprised that our police actually did anything to try and catch a cell phone thief. This is amazing news.

I mean ... if you lost your mobile phone, would you even believe that making a police report would amount to anything? I am not trying to be sarcastic but reality in Singapore is, if you make a police report about loss of mobile phone - it's just as good as wasting a few hours down at some NPP or NCC. You'll never get your phone back as the police will just file this report away with the other thousands of lost phone reports. C'mon, this "Find my Phone" app is ubiquitous in iPhones - why do not hear news of police finding other lost phones this way.

The difference is - in this case - the phone was stolen in a snatch theft incident. For reasons known only to the police themselves, phones lost thru snatch theft values a higher priority than phones lost thru other means of theft or misplacement. Thus they seem to have taken action.
