IIRC, north korea is rich in one of the raw materials (cant rmb wads tat)...

And tats one of the reason why they are able to survive till now

[:)]

"coal, lead, tungsten, zinc, graphite, magnesite, iron ore, copper, gold, pyrites, salt, fluorspar, hydropower"

they survive cos of oil and food donations from papa china, mama usa and brother southkorea. most of their mining tech is outdated which does not allow them to efficiently extract and or reach most of these precious metals/minerals. They got lots of hydropower though, and are self sufficient in terms of power generation (coal) other than their single oil powered thermal plant.

Singapore is too small and insignificant to cause any global concern.

See this: intercepted and/or whistleblown documents referring to singapore by US embassies are not even in the reckoning in the graph at the bottom

http://cablegate.wikileaks.org/index.html

It send shivers down my spine.

I am wondering Wikileaks got similar report about how long Singapore can tahan after Ah-Kong's good bye?

more leaks on our little island..

WikiLeaks hits Singapore diplomats

SINGAPORE: Singapore diplomats think the leaders of some close Asian allies are corrupt, incompetent or stupid, cables from WikiLeaks revealed Sunday.

Confidential diplomatic notes given by the whistleblower website to Australia's Fairfax media group contained unflattering assessments of key figures in Malaysia, Thailand, India and Japan.

"A lack of competent leadership is a real problem for Malaysia," permanent secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bilahari Kausikan reportedly told US Deputy Secretary of Defence for East Asia David Sedney in a cable dated September 2008.

As such, "the situation in neighbouring Malaysia is confused and dangerous," fuelled by a "distinct possibility of racial conflict" that could see ethnic Chinese "flee" Malaysia and "overwhelm" Singapore, Bilahari was quoted as saying.

Another official, Peter Ho, reportedly described Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak as "an opportunist" who "would not hesitate" to be critical of Singapore if "it is expedient for him to do so."

He said allegations linking Najib to the murder of a Mongolian woman in 2006, which the leader has strongly rejected, would continue to "haunt" his political fortunes.

Bilahari was also critical of the Thai government in 2008, labelling then premier Thaksin Shinawatra as "corrupt" along with "everyone else, including the opposition."

He also said the Thai crown prince was "very erratic, and easily subject to influence," and warned of continued instability in Thailand.

In another 2009 memo, Singapore's ambassador at large Tommy Koh -- known for being mild-mannered and eloquent in public -- was uncharacteristically blunt in his assessment of Japan and India.

"Koh described Japan as 'the big fat loser' in the context of improving ties between China and ASEAN," a leaked cable detailing a meeting between him and US officials stated.

"He attributed the relative decline of Japan's stature in the region to Japan's 'stupidity, bad leadership, and lack of vision,'" it added.

"He was equally merciless towards India, describing it as 'half in, half out' of ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.)"

There was no immediate reaction from the Singapore government to the leaks but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) earlier issued a statement saying it is "critical to protect the confidentiality of diplomatic and official correspondence".

"Which is why Singapore has the Official Secrets Act (OSA)," an MFA spokesman said.

He said: "In particular, the selective release of documents, especially when taken out of context, will only serve to sow confusion and fail to provide a complete picture of the important issues that were being discussed (among) leaders in the strictest of confidentiality."

Personally, I find their remarks and opinions on malaysia quite naive, and shows some lack of understanding that situation or scenario in malaysia is very much different from indonesia. Perhaps they should employ someone who was born and grew up in malaysia as their "consultant".

Nevertheless, it is interesting to note the comments on anwar, the opposition leader. So, it is indeed dangerous to be alone with him! [laugh]

I don't think all this leaked info will lead to problems with relations between countries, though. Every country has its own intelligence services working, so they must have known all along - no need for wikileaks.

The things is.... all the info are enter by the Americano..... from what they "understand" from the various chit chat they have with all the Diplomats.... how "accurate" are those account?? Can there be a "misinterpretation"?? God knows... by just simply highlighting the embarassng part and not the whole context, that can be dangerous if someone decide to take it very seriously......

But ya guess most of it are Sin Min style of gossip..... will not be surprise our neighbours are saying the same thing about our country and leaders..... [:p] .... so now everybody know when they chit chat, they not talk about global warming, global financial crisis, global pollution..... but instead poke fun at one another and maybe talk about D24 durian, nice resorts/disco/nite club/chicks/mahjong..... [:p]

Wikileaks are doing the world a favor with the exceptions to world leaders or economically powerful loud mouth people in general. Most of these people are seen in public as mature human beings but yet unable to hold their mouths and minds when coming to comment about other peoples' personality and countries. These loud mouths are cowards too in their own ways as they hide their feelings. Wikileaks have in a way stopped these people from making any more of such remarks about other people or be mindful that now what they say may actually hit them back in turn hence consequential effects of their own wrong doings.

With Wikileaks the world may actually be a safer place to live in! [:)]
